I had the opportunity to take this pad on the road with Carolina Gold throughout the 2026 season, and it held up through the demands of the summer. Having a reliable practice surface makes all the difference.

Huge thanks to 825 for making a pad that can handle the work!

My love of rudimental drumming had been resurfacing recently 🌝

I feel like it should be stated that these groups DO practice with click tracks when they’re rehearsing and preparing for performances, but that the shows themselves are not gridded out the way many band/artist shows are in 2026. Time has to be maintained by the group when it comes time to do the things and even more challenging, hitting tempo ramps together without a singular source providing the “official” time.

Even more fun to me is the sorta old school pipe/fife style where there’s a lot of push/pull of the time from rudiment to rudiment. Some licks feel like they arrive a little bit late, just sort of a stylistic thing that gives a swing/lope to what could otherwise sound very scientific.

Modern American corps style doesn’t do much for me - don’t get me wrong, I’m actually overly impressed with the playing quality and the execution and I’m truly not sure anyone is executing at a higher level, but the music leaves me feeling a little bit hollow and I can’t help but wonder if pushing tempos and note values to their extremes has kinda missed the point along the way.

Anyway, here’s some old school licks 😛
