NEWS: 2027 4⭐ Josiah Nance has committed to SMU and Andy Enfield, he tells @league.ready.

The 6-foot-5 guard out of Notre Dame-Sherman Oaks (CA) chose SMU over Wake Forest, Boston College and USC among many others.

He’s the #80 overall prospect in the SCNext 100.

Josiah Nance, the No. 78 overall recruit in the national 2027 class, tells @247sports he has committed to #SMU.

The Mustangs are getting a big-bodied lefty guard who can thrive operating on and off the ball. He scores off pull-ups, can put pressure on the rim, and has defensive upside given his physical prowess.

He has long hoisted a reputation of being one of the top West Coast prospects entering the high school ranks and has only improved his production throughout his career.

Bracketball 2026-27 Top 100 CBB Players

#19: Nigel James Jr. (Marquette, G | So.)

Heads up: this is write-up will be dominated by analytics, so if you don’t like nerdball/metrics/analytics, feel free to skip. Just know that NJJ is one of the best returning freshmen in the entire country and has the potential to lead a Marquette team that will be VERY good this year.

There were two freshmen 6’0 or shorter last year to boast a WARP (Wins Above Replacement Player) above 4.5 — Chance Mallory (#37 in our t100) and Nigel James Jr.

WARP, a @CBBAnalytics “All-In-One Stat”, is the metric that we pay attention to most (and is weighted heaviest within our model) when evaluating the impact a player has on their team’s success. The metric was developed by Kevin Pelton, and in his words, WARP “seeks to evaluate players in the context of a team made up of them and four completely average players. The performance of this team is then compared to that of a team made up of four average players and one replacement-level player”.

Separately, NJJ was the ONLY freshman in the country, 6’0 or shorter, with a PER (Player Efficiency Rating) above 21.

PER, another CBBAnalytics “All-In-One Stat”, is the second heaviest weighting in our model when evaluating a player’s impact on their team’s success and how it projects. This metric was developed by John Hollinger, and in his words, PER “sums up all of a player’s positive accomplishments, subtracts the negative accomplishments, and returns a per-minute rating of a player’s performance.

Geek talk over.

NJJ is going to be a star and the Golden Eagles could have their best year in a while and have a chance to stay under 10 losses for the first time since 2023 and the second time in the past 15 years.

James’ projected line for 2026-27:

17.1 PPG
3.9 RPG
6.1 APG

Projections powered by @CBBAnalytics

19 days until College Basketball.
