Last week at the @vcfawrites Writers Conference on @calarts campus was a beautiful reminder of what happens when creativity, craft, and community come together.

I had the absolute best writing cohort—thoughtful, daring, generous writers doing the brave work of sharing their stories. I couldn’t have asked for a more enthusiastic, respectful, and creative group. The future of fiction is very bright and I cannot wait to see their stories on our shelves. And thank you for the laughs, snacks, and life lessons. Our next meetup will be in matching joggers. 😉

I loved joining panels, giving a lecture on the business of books, and—rare for me—reading from Saving Face. I don’t usually agree to read my work aloud, which made sharing those pages with this community especially meaningful.

An inspiring week not just for the students, but for all of us on faculty too. So grateful for the conversations, the pages, the questions, and the community. We can never have enough literary friends.

A massive thank you to @adam.mcomber and @chasingthewildgoose for making this such a fulfilling and rewarding experience for everyone involved. An undertaking like this requires impeccable planning and organization (I know that personally from organizing my @jetsetwrite Puerto Vallarta retreat 😅). Adam and Brie made the week feel seamless for everyone involved. They brought such heart, passion, and warmth to the event and are the heart and soul of it. I’m grateful to have met you both. ♥️

And for any writers who missed my workshop in August (or just misses me and wants to see me again), I’m doing a writing retreat May 30-June 5, 2027 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico that is currently $2,995 for a week of craft, creativity, and community, and details are at the link in my bio.

Until next time…

Just a few pub day pics from yesterday! I have always wanted to be asked to write a playlist for Largehearted Boy, so I am so pleased to present the Nobody Code playlist. Thank you, @largeheartedboy! I’m currently at the @vcfaedu Writers Conference and my workshop showed up with noisemakers and made me feel like a queen on pub day. Writers are the best people. 😭🥰

Thank you @boydsmills for being the best writing retreat I know! Great room and board and no distractions unless you want them. My latest visit had a lovely distraction as a mama Robin and babies nested on my porch. Adored watching their interaction❤️❤️

I’m six months into my MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults with @vcfaedu — a low-residency program that allows me to keep working and building my creative writing program for kids in CT while I’m in grad school. I’m busy as hell but never been happier 💜

This gem of a program has been deeply nourishing for both my spirit and creative skills. It’s ALSO revealed a major truth: I. Love. Writing. Picture. Books.

To be clear: I know awards aren’t everything. But I cried and felt very proud to win the Award for Excellence in Writing Picture Books for my book Ella and the Elevator—a rhyming romp inspired by some LITE childhood trauma that gullible little sisters worldwide have been known to face.

I didn’t need to be awarded for my love of picture books. Every book I connected with and meter I tightened to work just right this past semester felt like winning enough.

But man, being recognized by my MFA faculty felt like flying 🥹

Working hard to make sure Ella and the Elevator can be on your library bookshelves one day 📚
