Two Biology Honors College students are helping lead the way in undergraduate research.

At the National Conference on Undergraduate Research, SLSS students Molly Goecker and Brooke Schofield, both biology majors in the Honors College, presented research shaped by both scientific inquiry and personal experience.

Molly’s work explores how psilocybin could help address gaps in treatment for alcohol use disorder, particularly among underserved populations. Brooke’s research examines transcranial magnetic stimulation as a treatment for traumatic brain injury and PTSD-related symptoms.

Their projects reflect the depth, purpose, and impact of student research happening in SLSS.

🎹 Whether it’s code or a chord, the feeling of satisfaction is what drives Kel Raphael ⌨️

The senior in Virginia Commonwealth University’s Honors College will graduate this spring with two degrees: a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Arts with a concentration in Piano Performance, and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Programming from the College of Engineering.

To Raphael, piano and computer science overlap in a compelling way: the deep feeling of accomplishment when things go right.

“The moment I can play through a piece of music and make it sound exactly how I want it to sound – or when I eventually figure out a problem with, say, a piece of code after some head bashing, but I eventually get it to work,” they said of the parallel. “That moment always feels really good.”

Raphael has kept both sides of their interests balanced and thriving without sacrificing one for the other. It was a challenge, but meeting it kept them fulfilled through their undergraduate career.

Our incredible students showing off their research at this week’s National Conference on Undergraduate Research! 📚✨

Nearly 500 students presented their work during the three-day conference, which drew a record-breaking 5,000+ undergraduate researchers from across the U.S.

For the first time in its history, Virginia Commonwealth University hosted the nation’s largest and most prestigious undergraduate research conference right here in Richmond. Since its start in 1987, this year’s NCUR was the biggest yet.

Swipe to see our students in action. 👏 #VCUCHS
