A NOTE FROM THE CHIEF’S DESK:

Leadership often means sharing your expertise with others to make sure the entire organization is on the same page.

Chief Hunter snapped this photo of Officer Moss, one of our traffic units, engaging in training with our colleagues over at VCU Parking and Transportation. The purpose of this session is to ensure police and parking officials use the same hand signals to direct traffic during events.

If you’ve been to a graduation, theater performance or basketball game, this training will help make things smoother for all drivers and pedestrians.

Chief Hunter puts it this way: “Taking ownership of an issue goes well beyond your daily assignment. I so appreciate the enthusiasm Officer Moss shows for the issue of traffic and pedestrian safety. Work like this is reflected on the street and results in a safer environment for our community.”

No matter your challenge today, taking ownership and working to bring others along with you goes a long way.

HEADS UP! Traffic enforcement operation underway along North Harrison Street near VCU.

Officers will be focused on enforcing highway signs along Harrison Street, especially where it intersects both West Grace Street and West Franklin Street.

VCU Police crime analysts found that there is a correlation between the number of vehicle-pedestrian crashes and traffic violations in this area.

For at least the next two weeks, our officers will be focused on enforcing posted highway signs in this corridor, particularly the “No Left Turn” and “No Turn on Red.”

While some drivers might view them as inconvenient, the signs are there to protect all roadway users, like the thousands of pedestrians and cyclists who use this corridor to get to and from campus or elsewhere, day and night.

Please do your part to help keep the roadways safe. A HUGE part of that is paying close attention when you’re behind the wheel or moving using a different method.

We mustache you to listen up to Officer Green’s advice 🥸

In all seriousness, pedestrian safety is a top issue for our community (57% said so on the annual Perception of Safety Survey). Let’s all do our part to help make the streets safe.

Cross when you get the signal: Think of the walk sign at an intersections as the “pedestrian street light.” Waiting for the green light in a vehicle is common; do the same when you’re crossing at a lighted intersection.

Try to not “creep”: Inching into or standing in the roadway while waiting for your turn to cross is not safe. Plain and simple. Stay back on the landing or sidewalk until you see it’s safe to cross (and then keep your eyes scanning as you do).

Heads up, Phones Down: Your senses are your most powerful safety tool when walking through the city. Please eliminate distractions like devices when crossing the street. Who knows you might enjoy your stroll even more!

RAMS ARE BACK. 🖤💛

This is the first week of the semester and the energy is high now that students are back on campus!

This moment is from last year’s Ram Spirit Walk parade. Version 2026 is coming up later today. Around 4pm, expect brief, temporary street closures along Harrison Street from the Siegel Center down to Park Avenue.

Let’s all remember, there are thousands of people and vehicles moving through the VCU area — day and night.

Drivers: Please slow down, cut out distractions and driver responsibly through VCU’s footprint.

Pedestrians: Keep your heads up when crossing the street. Once it’s your turn to cross — wait three seconds before leaving the curb. Three seconds gives you a moment to look again, see what’s moving, and know what’s around you before you step into the street.

Let’s have an unmatched year Ram Nation!

Socials guy got a little too into the move-in energy today. . . 😂

Since you’re here, here’s a couple things for Saturday move-in to keep in mind:

* Street parking near residence halls are for unloading only. Long term parking is at your designated parking deck.
* There will be lots of vehicles and people moving through the Monroe Park Campus. PLEASE slow down when you’re driving.
* Pedestrians — VCUPD officers will be out at most intersections directing traffic. Please be patient; they are there to help you cross safely.
* Read the signs please. If you see one that says “ROAD CLOSED” or “NO PARKING” those are not suggestions.

We know moving can be stressful, but there are plenty of folks here to help if you need direction. SO happy to welcome so many Rams back to campus to start this new chapter together!

Welcome back Ram-ily!

Reframe: 100 Safest Days of Summer.

The National Road Safety Foundation (NRSF), Impact Teen Drivers, FCCLA, SADD, and We Save Lives joined forces along with others to turn the “100 Deadliest Days” between Memorial Day and Labor Day into the 100 Safest Days of Summer.

Every day is a great day to practice safe driving habits, especially for young people.

THE PLEDGE:

Because I care about the lives of others, I pledge to:

* Stay focused behind the wheel and avoid distractions.
* Speak up if I feel unsafe as a passenger.
* Never drive under the influence of alcohol, cannabis, fatigue or any other impairment.
* Always wear a seatbelt in every seat, every ride, and every person.
* Drive at safe speeds for conditions – and give people walking, biking, or rolling the space they need.
* Be a leader by making safe choices and encouraging others to do the same.

Choose to make these the 100 Safest Days of Summer. Take the pledge at 👉 100safestdaysofsummer.org!

Getting to high school graduations doesn’t have to be head spinning! Take a few steps to make your celebration smooth and everyone else safe….

- Plan ahead and build in extra time for travel
- Have your parking pass ready to go when you pull up to the deck
- Do not cross Broad Street until VCUPD holds traffic up
- Follow directions when entering and exiting the parking decks
- Know what you can and cannot bring inside the Siegel Center
- If you’re not celebrating a graduate, consider avoiding the area these next two weeks

SHARE! High school graduation ceremonies return to Virginia Commonwealth University’s campus, notably the Stuart C. Siegel Center, from Monday, May 18, to Friday, May 29.

To manage the influx of visitors, VCU Police and VCU Parking and Transportation plan to implement a comprehensive traffic and safety plan, including changes to parking procedures for VCU subscribers.

“We are excited to welcome thousands of students, families and educators to our campus in the next few weeks,” VCU Police Chief Clarence T. Hunter Jr. said. “In order to ensure everyone celebrates their loved one’s milestone safely, we ask all visitors to review venue policies, your school district’s guidance and remain acutely aware of fellow travelers.”

Please make sure you follow guidance from your student’s school district and click the 🔗 in bio for full details.

Congratulations Class of 2026! 🎓🥳🎉
