Jalyn Cole has been one of the greatest hurdlers the state of Illinois has ever seen. No 110 hurdler has EVER done what he has. In the history of the State Meet, there has never been a defending champion in the 110 hurdles until JCole!

Jcole at the beginning 2023

Jalyn Cole 2024 Conference Champ as a sophomore!

2025 Sectional champ 13.79

2025 State Champ just missing the state record 13.82

2026 2x State Champ lean!

Taking the moment after realizing he broke the state record in 13.53 in the 110hurdles

Only doubted him.

Hoisting the State trophy for the second time!

There are people in this profession who make you feel like you belong before you have anything to offer them.

Jon Riley has always been one of those people for me.

No performance.
No ego.
No making you feel small so he can feel important.

Just solid.

That is why I call him the big homie.

Yes, the championships matter. The All-Americans matter. The Coach of the Year awards matter. The records matter.

But what stands out to me is that he has achieved all of that without losing the human part of coaching.

He represents what this profession is supposed to look like:

Winning without arrogance.
Leadership without theatrics.
Mentorship without needing credit.
Excellence without forgetting people.

And as a Black head coach building championship teams at VCU, his success carries weight beyond the medal count.

Some young coach sees him and understands the position is possible.

Some young athlete sees him and understands leadership can look like them.

Some former athlete still carries something he taught them long after the uniform came off.

That is impact.

Coach Riley, this is simply me saying I see you.

I respect what you built.

I appreciate how you have always treated me.

And I hope the people whose lives you have touched use this moment to tell their stories too.

Do not just congratulate him. Tell us what Coach Riley gave you that cannot be measured on a results sheet.

Salute to the big homie. 🐏
