Where do I fit into 100 years of Graham?

I grew up watching dance on PBS and on VHS tapes. And even though I was desperate to be a ballerina just like Gelsey Kirkland, I still loved Martha’s work. I even begged my high school to offer Graham technique, but I got shot down. “It’s terrible for your hips!” Our department chair cried. Meanwhile, we had classical ballet every day…
When I finished high school I finally got over my ballet dreams and decided modern dance would be the more liberating, fulfilling path. And in college, I finally got to study Graham. While joining the company was not part of my story, I’m so grateful to be able to have studied the work as an undergraduate, and to still be able to study it now. It makes sense in my body in a way that ballet never did. I love so many of the characters and concepts Martha put in her work. And my goodness, Graham teachers are so funny and generous! Congratulations to all of the dancers who studied Martha’s work! Whether you were Martha’s protégés, whether she told you you’d never join the company, whether you were born after she died, whatever your connection to the work, you are part of the legacy! We made it through the first hundred years, and I’m so excited for the next and the next and the next!

This mixed-media piece brings together music, basketball, street culture and poetry. Pages from Tupac Shakur’s The Rose That Grew from Concrete are worked into the piece alongside vinyl records, a sneaker and basketball imagery, giving the work a mix of energy, nostalgia and reflection.

Graham for Europe SI is my annual check-in to see whether I’m still aligned with the drama, the craziness... and, of course, Martha Graham. 😁

In order (and with the appropriate amount of sarcasm):

• Christine Dakin, aka the goddess, teaching Advanced Pro, and Maria (my heir. IYKYK 😂❤️)

This summer in Paris, all our technique classes will be accompanied by 3 wonderful musicians 🎶 Hector Gomez from Argentina, @sebcuiret from Metz (France) and on the first and last day @deborah_shannon_diouf from the USA. They’ll also be joined by @moi_matudrums, a musician from Chile, who is coming to learn, collaborate, and share this special tradition of accompanying Graham classes.
