We’re grateful…

Fun fact: The inspiration for this song came in one of @lembn_’s quiet times. That’s where God stepped in and inspired Lem with the concept, 1st verse and Bridge. As usual when one of us gets a concept, we bring it to the other to finish. After spending roughly 6/7 hours on it after church, from 7pm Sunday - 2am on a Monday morning we finished it and the when to work.

It was a beat we struggled to make for a a while. Originally a loop we created from a production session with @johnatthepiano. Both Lem and Dylan tried to convince me to cut it but God said that this would be the most powerful song on the Album. We tried to think of ways to make the song more powerful by adding builds and drums but it was clear that the power of the song came through the simplicity, lyrics and unity.

Sometimes we think there is more to something but God is saying, no I’ve completed the work. Move onto the next thing.

I used to fear that the “good times” would eventually end and that we would become complacent with one another.

Then one day, after I confessed this, someone asked me, “Do you ever worry about these things concerning your relationship with God?”

I said, “Never.”

She replied, “Well then, you have nothing to worry about.”

Thank you God for being the first one to choose me, for giving me the opportunity to choose you and for helping me choose @veesen. 🥭

Limiting Lie: “If God forgives me, I don’t have to deal with what my choices caused.”

I’ll be honest, this one has been sitting heavy on me lately, because a while back I made the decision to leave the corporate world and build something of my own, and it’s been up and down since day one, but more recently it’s been genuinely hard. I’ve noticed that when things get hard, it’s tempting to either sink into shame or quietly look for somewhere else to put the weight of it, and neither of those is really honesty.

I don’t think sober mindedness is about being hard on ourselves so much as being honest, looking gently but clearly at my own decisions, the ones that led me here and the ones I’m still making in this season, and choosing to own them instead of setting them down somewhere else.

I’ve talked with a lot of Christians who wrestle with this, myself included some days. When life gets difficult, especially difficulty that traces back to something we chose, accountability can feel like the last place we want to look, because it’s easier to quietly question God instead, wondering why He’d let this happen or telling ourselves that if this was really His will it wouldn’t feel like it’s falling apart. I understand that impulse, but I’m learning it’s usually not about God’s will at all, it’s about not wanting to sit with my own part in it.

Grace doesn’t erase what I have to carry, it just means I’m not carrying it by myself anymore.

I think about David here, because after his sin with Bathsheba, the prophet Nathan told him God had forgiven him completely and his sin was gone (2 Samuel 12:13), forgiven fully and right away, and yet real consequences still followed him through the chapters after, which tells me forgiveness was real and so was what came after, both true at the same time, and as far as I can tell David didn’t try to place that anywhere but on himself.

This season of building something new has quietly asked more honesty of me than my corporate job ever did, and I’m still learning that owning my part doesn’t cancel out God’s grace, if anything it feels like part of what it actually means to receive it.
