Join us on Sunday, April 26 at noon to commemorate the Armenian Genocide with a creative action of remembrance while celebrating community and the sanctuary this city offers to people from around the world. The site is at the northeast corner of Union Square, which the location of the Armenian Genocide Memorial Grove and a block from where artist Arshile Gorky had his studio on Union Square West. Let’s remember to ensure that genocides are acknowledged and justice prevails.

We are hoping for a small but dedicated crowd of people who share our artistic spirit and dedication to memory work during a time of great upheaval and change.

Such a lovely evening closing out 20 years in Brooklyn with some of my favorite people in the world 🌎 thank you everyone who came from so far and poured so much love into the space. I cannot express how difficult yet financially sound a decision it is to let go of my most beloved studio. As much as my heart is filled with your love, that much I will miss being in proximity to you. Being in community with y’all has been everything good in life. 💙💔💙💔💙💔💙💔 as @anuannam said after spending the last two months in it, “the Xenana is a zeitgeist “ indeed. I will miss being the queen of my little queendom, 600 square feet of art joy sisterhood made the biggest impact on my life and practice. My studio 💔💙💔💙💔💙🧚🏿‍♀️🌈🧚🏿‍♀️has been magical. Thank you @chitraaiyar @hellokaramvir @thirdeyefell @globallocalgourmet @brooklynstani @classic_lechannon @vriddhiblowsakiss @ananya.malagi @zanibahmadstudio @agm214 @kavitadas @monasaeedkamal @cd_clifford @hragv @veken and all others who came 💙🙌🏽

Two writers who have shaped how we think about art and its social contexts – Lucy R. Lippard and Hrag Vartanian – have been awarded the Susan C. Larsen Lifetime Achievement Award by the Dorothea and Leo Rabkin Foundation. The award is given to writers who have had a generational impact on the field and comes with a $50,000 unrestricted prize.

Lippard’s work as a critic, author, curator and activist spans decades and laid the intellectual groundwork for feminist, conceptual, political and environmental art. At the Aldrich Art Museum in Connecticut in 1971, Lippard presented “Twenty-Six Contemporary Women Artists,” a landmark exhibit in feminist art. Her book “Six Years: The Dematerialization of the Art Object from 1966 to 1972” is a seminal work on conceptual art. Lippard co-founded West-East Bag, Political Art Documentation/Distribution, Printed Matter, Heresies Collective, and others.

Vartanian is a leading voice on contemporary art, an art critic, curator, artist, podcaster, and lecturer. He is editor-in-chief of Hyperallergic, which has been a writing home for more than 2,500 brave voices from around the world. Co-founded with Vartanian’s spouse, Veken Gueyikian, Hyperallergic annually draws millions of readers, as well as listeners to its podcast, which Vartanian hosts. Hyperallergic is credited with reinvigorating arts journalism and is regarded for its unflinching advocacy for inclusion and representation. Among Vartanian’s many notable pieces are “Where Is the Public Discourse Around Art and Technology?” written for the NEA in 2021 and “Artsakh:🏺Cultural Heritage Under Threat 🛡,” a special Hyperallergic dossier recognized for its substantial research into the perils facing Armenian residents and art in the territory.

A little good news 🗞️ Pic is of Veken and my desk in 2011 (yes, we were wacky enough to think sitting side by side would work). We still have the same office but a lot has changed.

About last night @kyledidthis solo show Let Art Be In the Practice of Freedom @theemptycircle So proud of my husband and his commitment to his art practice in service of social change. The show is up until May 27th
Repost from hragv • Checked out @kyledidthis’s excellent little retrospective of graphic liberation at @theemptycircle. Kyle has been very crucial in incubating and amplifying so much of the new activist graphic lexicon emerging from this city in the last decade. His clear and contagiously memeable style buzzes in your brain days after you see it. Check this out. Nothing is for sale.
