Breaking Ridgewood news: we're hearing that an Italian place is set to take the place of @velmarestaurant, which suddenly closed its doors last last December. Goodbye Velma, Hello "Monti’s Tavern."

Read the full scoop from Aaron Tomey at the 🔗 in bio.

"Velma closed down because ownership no longer wanted to operate and financially support it," the chef Paulina Loyo-Grigoris told us about the decision to shut down her pasta and pizza concept, which as been on Seneca Avenue since 2023.

Over in Bushwick, Loyo-Grigoris runs @gordoscantina , where she and her business partner JR Savage have had more success.

The spot on Seneca Avenue, right by the M station, will soon turn into what a bartender next door at @the_seneca tells us will also be an Italian concept. The cosmic pasta scales will soon be rebalanced.

Craig Montalbano, listed as the principal on a June liquor license filing that confirms he's going to call the new place "Monti’s Tavern," is a real estate developer who also owns the Seneca and also previously developed the Scarlet, an eight-story apartment building off the DeKalb L.

An opening date couldn’t be confirmed, but we've heard that Monti’s Tavern would begin service “by the end of the summer.”
