Thursday night was my first crit of the year and it's nearly August. Got the passport out to cross the bridge and headed to Ennerdale. The kids came to watch and I didn't give them much to see. I missed my pedal on the start which wasn't great. I sprinted to get on the group, came round one rider and was on the next. He then lost the wheel so I has to come round, as I closed to the back more attacks went. He then sprinted past me to join the group leaving me still chasing in the wind (I've always said I have no sprint). I never did close the gap. The odd thing was that same guy then attacked off the front the following lap, it probably wasn't but it really felt like he took me and Nick (another para-cyclist, the only two in the race) out the back on purpose. We then rode hard doing lap turns all race. Just before the halfway point we caught and passed our first rider. We carried on with the lap turns and caught the next rider with about 6 laps to go. They then sat on us while we carried on our two up TT. We were caught in the final half lap so trying to stay out the way of the sprint finish. I was atleast first para rider home. It really wasn't my best race but the kids said I did well.

Numbers are great for training but the only one that matters in a race is where you finish. Despite the finishing position being pants from a training perspective things are going the right way. In the last 9 days I've received 3 emails from training peaks telling me to update my threshold power. It went up 8 watts after a TT, another 15 watts the following day after a road race then another 4 watts following the crit. So that's 27 watts (12.5%) in under 2 weeks. I'm going well for me but felt a long way off. Crits are getting crazy fast at cat 3/4 level 27.6 mph average for the group.

Wednesday was the Great Limber TLI. Needless to say numbers were down, although the first two groups were more depleted than the faster groups. Our group was just five and first time up the climb it was down to four. Personally I wanted to keep it at five but let's just say the willy waving started early. Part way up I knew the pace was too high to maintain for the race, so called to ease up. The willy waving carried on, so on the steepest section towards the top I rode my pace and was shouted to ease up. Guess what, you didn't wait for me so I'll just keep going thanks. I made them close the gap on the descent.

The three then preceeded to sit behind me for most of the descent, the following flat and all the second climb. That did mean I was first over the line for the first two laps. The following descent I sat on as I'd done a full 8.4 mile lap turn and I knew I'd be doing the full 2.5 mile climb again. Just before we hit the steepest section we got caught, I tried to accelerate to get on but as we hit the steep section the group started to split. As it flattened a little I managed to come round a couple and get on the back of a small group. On the final descent I tried to sit on the faster riders but they were playing games so I just rode my pace and I surprised myself by closing the gaps when they attacked (which made no sense). I was then the one riding the climb and sure enough as we hit the steep section one put a big attack in, the other two tried to close and I was already on my limit. I was pushing through cramp and despite that I still managed to gain a couple of places to cross the line 17th. Not too bad.

It’s been a few years since I’ve ridden MTB, but it felt great to be back on the fat tyres instead of the skinny road tyres. 🚵‍♂️

I won’t be rushing to swap the road bike for the mountain bike though… yesterday was an absolute beast! 🤢😂

The roots, the climbs (some of which I proudly walked 🤣), the technical sections, and the constant effort were a reminder that MTB fitness is a completely different kind of fitness.

It was tough, but the downhill sections made every climb worthwhile. They reminded me why getting out on the trails is so addictive. Great to get back out in the woods, get dusty, and enjoy the trails again. 👊🌲🚵‍♂️

Thank you Rob @ryimagesphotos for the images. 👊

335 km. 3,003 m of climbing. 14 hours in the saddle.

Chase The Sun South complete. ☀️🚴‍♂️

The longest ride I’ve ever done and one I’ll never forget.

There were highs, lows, tired legs, sore shoulders, and moments where the finish felt a very long way away. But every mile was worth it.

Huge thanks to everyone who supported, encouraged, and shared the road along the way.

The Trek was faultless, the views were incredible, and the sense of achievement at the finish line made every pedal stroke worthwhile.

Sometimes the biggest challenge isn’t racing others - it’s finding out what you’re capable of when you refuse to quit.

335 km. Sunrise to sunset. Job done. ☀️💪

Great day out on the bike yesterday riding around Anglesey. ☀️🚴‍♂️

The weather was spot on, the roads were quiet, and I managed to beat last year’s ride time by over 30 minutes.

The Trek Madone continues to impress - an absolute beast of a bike that just wants to go fast.

By the end, my body battery was running on fumes, but days like this remind me why I love cycling. Sometimes it’s not about the numbers; it’s about getting out there, enjoying the ride, and seeing what you’re capable of.

Roll on to Chase The Sun South on Saturday.

Trek Madone Project One’s in their natural habitat.
🚴‍♂️💨

Built for speed, made for racing, and right at home on the circuit.

There’s nothing quite like pinning on a number, hearing the whistle, and finding out what’s left in the legs when it matters most.

Two bikes. Two riders. One passion for racing.

@fredwhittonchallenge was epic. What a day. Rolling out at 7:10 in the frostmade for a cold start before The Struggle, quick warm up then the descent into the shaded road of the Kirkstone pass with temps showing as -1. Rest of the ride was class. Got in with a solid pace line from Matterdale to bottom of Honister before thinking I’d be paying for the effort later on. Felt cramp coming on as we swung left towards the steepest hill of the day but managed to get away with it. Raced this route before as a tri but sharing it with 2500 other cyclists made it an amazing experience. Defo one for a tick list if you like to suffer. Finished in 7hrs 25mins elapsed time but 7:00 moving time, happy with that. Will have to get my name back in for next year😆. Huge thanks to all the volunteers out on the course and the spectators for the cheers. @tricentraluk @triathlon_delliot @giantuk @envecomposites @scienceinsport @velothreads.cc
