Premiering on Cartoon Network in 2008, The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack became one of the network’s strangest and most memorable animated series, combining childhood adventure with unsettling imagery and dark humor. Created by Thurop Van Orman, the show follows Flapjack, an optimistic young boy raised by a talking whale named Bubbie, and his reckless pirate companion, Captain K’nuckles. Together, they spend their days searching for the legendary Candied Island, a mythical paradise supposedly filled with candy. Most of their adventures take place in Stormalong Harbor, a bizarre seaside town populated by eccentric sailors, mysterious creatures and characters with exaggerated, sometimes disturbing appearances. What made Flapjack stand out was its unusual animation style. The series frequently mixed grotesque close-ups, surreal imagery and uncomfortable humor with the innocence of a traditional children’s cartoon, creating an atmosphere unlike almost anything else airing at the time. Although the show only ran for three seasons before ending in 2010, it developed a dedicated cult following. Its creative influence also extended beyond its original run, with several artists who worked on the series later helping create shows like Adventure Time, Regular Show and Gravity Falls. Today, Flapjack remains one of Cartoon Network’s most distinctive cartoons, remembered for its strange world, unforgettable characters and ability to make something simultaneously funny, nostalgic and genuinely unsettling.

ft. Miguel Adrover Spring 2001 — The Resourceful Rawness of an East Village Pioneer Miguel Adrover’s Spring 2001 runway came during one of the most interesting stretches of his career. After moving to New York in the early 90s, Adrover worked odd jobs while developing clothes out of an East Village basement. He experimented with upcycling, repurposed materials and familiar designer logos long before those ideas became common in fashion. In 1995 he opened the Horn boutique with Douglas Hobbs, which became a spot for emerging designers and carried names like Alexander McQueen. Adrover debuted his first runway collection in 1999 and quickly became known for challenging what luxury fashion was supposed to look like. His early 2000s collections still stand out today because they felt raw, resourceful and completely removed from traditional luxury. He eventually stepped away from the fashion industry and returned to Spain, shifting more of his focus toward art. Credit: @vendxttta Follow for more. In 2018, Google removed its famous “Don’t be evil” motto from the opening of its code of conduct, nearly two decades after the phrase became part of the company’s identity. The motto was originally meant to remind employees to put ethics ahead of business interests. One of the employees behind it wanted a phrase that would be difficult for the company to abandon. When Alphabet became Google’s parent company in 2015, it adopted “Do the right thing” as its own motto. Google later moved “Don’t be evil” out of the opening of its code of conduct in 2018, although the phrase wasn’t removed entirely. The change sparked criticism, especially given Google’s growing controversies around privacy and data collection. However, there’s no confirmed evidence that those issues directly caused the decision
