hyaline is an interdisciplinary live performance; a new collaboration between artists x/o and gooie. Drawing from cycles in nature such as slug mating rituals, isopod molting and mycelial networks, hyaline is an exercise in biomimicry, sonic and material experimentation. hyaline explores processes from nature in relation to community formation, vulnerability, care, and self-actualization, to reflect upon queerness existing beyond the human experience. The work is conceived as part performance art, part live experimental music. Instruments include the performers’ bodies, voice, and a limited set of live sound sources such as laptop, contact mics, mixer, biosonification device, and wireless microphones. Content Warning: This performance contains heavy strobe lighting, and loud noise. Earplugs will be provided. Experimental club icon returns to Vancouver under new moniker Hesaitix (lifted from his pristine 2017 album of the same name, fka M.E.S.H) and will perform his first live set in Vancouver here at Fountains III with Jiyoung Wi and Bethlehem. His latest release, Noctian Airgap, is riddled with residues of early trip hop, warped downtempo,  reconstructed memories of old electronica projects, and ephemera, into what he has called a “nostalgia album”. Not to be missed. “Through the haze we could make out hardly anything. Just the black line of the horizon. And in the distance the faint glimmering of the sea.” ──┼╴ James Whipple returns from a long period of musical dormancy with his first full length LP for PAN since 2017. As M.E.S.H., he honed a singular and unpredictable sonic identity on his debut album Piteous Gate and helped define the sound of experimental club music in the 2010s. Re-emerging now as Hesaitix, the now-familiar motifs have become streamlined, the sound palette both more refined and more elaborate. Even at its most abstract, there is an uncanny presence permeating the record, a convincing emotional reality with its own narrative and spatial logic. Moving beyond the fragmented sound of his previous work, Noctian Airgap finds the artist embracing the hypnotic effects of rhythm. After suffering a stroke in 2020, James stepped back from music for a number of years, turning his attention to fiction writing. His first novel will be published by Deluge Books in 2026. In 2024, he composed the score for choreographer Hea Min Jung’s Code of Engagement. We are longtime fans of Jiyoung and are so excited to host her first live performance in Vancouver on December 6. Her performance is a thirty minute psychoacoustic experience. An embodied violin ritual, where time collapses into an unstable architecture of memory, meditations on death, and the space in between. 4’44” 𝄞𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ 𓈈⭒♬ ﾟ. Jiyoung Wi is a musician/improviser and fiction writer floating between Rotterdam and Seoul. Her bifocal practice explores narrative possibilities in non-image-based mediums. She has developed a series of ‘sound fiction’ works focusing on the tentative reciprocity between sound and text. As a self-punitive improviser, through her negative virtuosity and risk-taking gestures, she confronts the thresholds of sonic immediacy. She has performed at venues such as Volksbühne (DE), Cafe OTO (UK), Columbia University (US), Les Siestes Festival (FR), The Grey Space in the Middle (NL), AN(8)X Festival (DE), The Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp (BE), Tama Art University (JP, upcoming) and Silent Green (DE) among others. She has also contributed as a sound producer in exhibitions and performances held at the Sharjah Biennial (UAE), The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Gwacheon (KR), SeMA (KR), Ilmin Museum of Art (KR), Oil Tank Culture Park (KR), Insa Art Space (KR), and Leeum Museum of Art (KR), among others. Joining us this Wednesday, we have MIIIA (@miiia_n3zha ) in their first live presentation of “Ashes of Time”, inspired by Wong Kar Wai’s work and classic Asian cult cinema. Through slow movements, shadows, and ritual-like gestures, it displays the connections between memory, longing, and devotion, as well as one’s internalizations about power, fate, and desire. Their performance will also feature visual work by Melt (@melt.a.way ). Following will be live performances from 8ULENTINA (@8ulentina ) and Embaci (@embaci ). This project is presented in collaboration with IndieFest (@opera_reborn ) and Chapel Sound (@chapelsound ) to showcase “Future Mythologies”.
