Over the last 6 years working as a freelance instructor and content creator, I have learnt some difficult and invaluable lessons. Here are 4 mantras/mindset shifters that you might find helpful if you’re a freelancer too…

1. ‘’I pick the work, the work doesn’t pick me’’

More often than not the work we do and the people we work with are a choice. It might be tempting to immediately say yes to everything, especially when an opportunity or offer sounds enticing. But I’ve learnt it’s important to take your time and to really consider whether this is work that fulfils you, serves the direction you want to go in and honours your work boundaries e.g. contract terms, number of hours, environment, communication style etc.

2. ‘’my time, experience and expertise are valuable’’

This is an important one when providing a quote for your service. Looking back I definitely had a habit of underselling my services out of a fear of not being enough. If this is a habit of yours too, challenge that voice in your head that says you’re not valuable enough to charge ‘x’ amount- are you uncomfortable with charging that amount because you’re genuinely not able to provide that quality of service or are you uncomfortable because you’re afraid they’ll say no/think you’re demanding/have imposter syndrome?? There’s a reason why someone wants to work with you particularly- remember that.

3. ‘’I have something unique and special to offer’’

I think it’s easy to get caught up in the mindset of ‘oh well it’s been done before so why bother?’. If you have a skill, you’ll have a way of performing that skill that no one else does. No one else has had the exact same experiences you’ve had or shares your exact personality. This is where I think having a personal brand is a powerful tool as well, especially if your space/industry is saturated. We’ve all heard that quote ‘no one is you and that is your superpower’- cheesy maybe, but also very true, so use it!

4. ‘’I am allowed to make mistakes and I am growing every day’’

If you let your fear of making a mistake or failing at something override action, you’ll never progress towards your goal. **continued in comments**
