🎙️ Working Dogs and Whiskey | @atk9usa Mini Series

Can you get your dog off a bite when you can’t see or hear what’s happening around you?

In this ATK9 mini series interview, we sit down with Ian Austin @veritaskennels to talk about his leash manipulation and handling class. From managing long lines to directing dogs from the end of the leash, Ian puts the focus on the handler’s skills and how much the person holding the line influences the dog.

He also shares his unique approach to teaching lift offs: having students wear blackout goggles and noise cancelling headphones. Taking away sight and sound challenges handlers to work by feel and build confidence in their mechanics when their senses are limited.

Getting your dog to the bite is only part of the responsibility. Being able to safely get them off matters just as much.

I come back to this thought atleast every other week, sometimes more often. Being in the equipment realm, a maker, keeping my head space there, there's no question that you must stay centered in the work and visit your 'why' as much as possible. This is because the work brings about the process which creates the vision. The vision of risk mitigation, force multipliers, and what truly keeps the dog relevant in this day and age. Without the work, you cannot create.

👣🐾⚡️Proximity is Not Integration - Exposure is Not Inoculation ⚡️👣🐾

Our approach emphasizes progressive skill development, clear performance standards, and the systematic integration of canine teams into operational environments.

We don’t simply expose teams to stressors. We develop the skills, confidence, and reliability necessary to perform in a pressurized environment.
