The Burning Tree: Verity FitzGerald on Seeing Ourselves in the Frame.

Driving through the bush in Botswana, Verity FitzGerald once stopped for a tree burning in the middle of nowhere.
No people. No explanation. Just fire.
Everyone in the car waited as she photographed it.
At the time, it felt surreal, one of those strange, unpredictable scenes that define life in Botswana.
But years later, the image has shifted in meaning.

To Verity, it now feels like the perfect metaphor for our times: the world is burning, and most of us pass by without stopping to look.

That’s the thread running through her work.
Whether photographing a family in crisis, a campaign for survivors of abuse, or documenting life across continents,Verity insists that photographs aren’t just about what’s inside the frame.
They’re about us, the viewers. What we notice. What we dismiss. What we bring to the image when we stand in front of it.
In her words: every frame is both a story and a mirror.

In this talk, Verity FitzGerald reminds us that the act of looking is never passive; it’s participation.

An honour to deliver my first graduation commencement address to the class of 2026 at The Mandela Rhodes Foundation, a place where African leadership is harnessed through postgraduate scholarships and leadership development for young leaders in the continent - ensuring exceptional leadership in Africa,

As I accepted the invitation to speak, I paused in thought about these 2 humans - Nelson Mandela, and Cecil John Rhodes.. and accepted, because this partnership exists as an act of reconciliation.. reparations - a work to address the inequalities that result from the legacies of colonialism and apartheid…

The scholars in the room, lived in firsts of their own… I wanted to talk about how fear is an invitation, and how difference is a super power.. and the lessons along the way.

I’m beyond thankful for the opportunity to share my journey, our work @theblackmermaid_foundation and the power of impact as we rise, and most importantly - the vision in amplifying the heart of Africa as Africans in the world.

Here, we’re spoilt with fresh encounters that celebrate the surprise, curiosity, and big personalities found in Botswana’s wild places. Predict the unpredictable: A feast for a hornbill, followed by a feast for wild dogs. A snoozy Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl, nosy hyena pups, and an unusual treetop adventure for a lion. A toothy crocodile smile, miniature versions of Africa’s largest bird, the ostrich, and a fleeting glimpse of the shy Bat-eared Fox.

Earth Day is observed every year on April 22, and it serves as a global reminder that the planet we depend on is fragile—and that human actions have a direct impact on its health.

It began in 1970, sparked by growing concern over pollution, oil spills, and environmental damage. What started as a national movement in the United States has since grown into a worldwide event, with millions of people across countries taking part in activities like clean-ups, tree planting, and climate awareness campaigns.
