There are moments in life when I feel the weight of everything I carry, my father’s legacy, my son’s future, my own unfinished dreams, and then I stand in front of these wings, and something inside me shifts.
Not metaphorically. Physically.
My chest opens. My breath deepens.
It is impossible to stand before the monumental wings created by Rafael San Juan, a Cuban soul who understands exile, resilience, and reinvention, and not feel something ancient wake up inside you. In the middle of Guadalajara, in the middle of concrete and glass and traffic and modern life, these colossal feathers rise from water like a promise.
And I see myself in them.
Each metal feather feels like a scar that chose to become strength. Each layered plate, like a memory that could have broken me but instead became structure. They are not soft wings. They are forged wings. Built from fire, from migration, from survival. Just like us.
When I look at them, I don’t see sculpture.
I see will.
I see the decision to rise even when gravity insists.
I see love, not the romantic kind, but the fierce kind. The kind that carries you across oceans. The kind that tells you, “You are allowed to fly even if no one gave you permission.”
There is something deeply intimate about wings. They are the most vulnerable part of any creature. Exposed. Extended. Declaring: “Here I am. Watch me rise.”
And yet these wings are unapologetic. Gigantic. Almost defiant against the skyline.
I think about how many times in my life I have folded my own wings to fit into rooms that were too small. How many times I doubted my own altitude. And then I stand before Rafael’s work, and I remember:
I was never meant to crawl.
None of us were.
Freedom is not political. It is not geographic. It is not even physical. Freedom is internal. It is the moment you decide that your past will not anchor you. That your fears will not clip you. That love, even after loss, is still worth opening yourself for.
These wings are not decoration.
They are a declaration.
They whisper to me: “Rise above the noise. Rise above the grief. Rise above the hatred. Rise above yourself.”
And I imagine them at home — not as objects
