It’s been a while but I’m back! I took a much needed birthday break and ended up finishing 3 books on my trip! This book has been on my radar ever since I saw the cover blown up on the wall at the Buder Branch Library in STL. It’s written by a Haitian author and I’ve been deep in my hoodoo bag as of late so…why not? Overall I enjoyed this book.

It’s a coming of age tale of Haitian immigrant Fabiola Toussaint. The book starts off with her immigrating to the US and hoping to do so with her mother. Her mother is detained due to issues with her “paperwork,” and Fabiola is left to navigate her new world in Detroit without her. Fabiola transitions to life with her cousins and aunt and feels like a fish out of water, but slowly acclimates to a new culture. This is a gritty tale, it’s YA but it goes there. Themes of domestic violence, drug dealing, addiction, and violence take center stage. There’s also space for Haitian hoodoo practices, sisterhood, teenage love, and family.

I appreciated how Koboi doesn’t shy away from the harsh realities of coming up in a rough city and what it can do for a teenage girl. I do wish there were more themes of community, as I know firsthand that it exists in Black “rough” cities across the United States. I also wish there was more time given to develop the story, especially the ending. I’ll keep it spoiler free, but the ending was potent and it deserved more exploration. All in all, I enjoyed this book and I do think it aged overall well. If you’ve read it, what did you think?

Big changes start with small conversations. 📚✨ Seems like electing a 34x convicted felon has *really* lowered the bar for men. Women everywhere are so tired of this crap. We will have to take this rage, call our moms, aunts, grandmothers and march to the polls. And mamas, we gotta teach em young. When we read books about democracy, fairness, and elections with our little ones, we aren’t just telling stories—we’re teaching them that their opinions matter, their voices have power, and every single vote counts.

Building a habit of civic engagement starts long before someone turns 18. It starts right on your lap during bedtime stories. By showing children how communities come together to make decisions, we empower them to grow up confident, caring, and ready to stand up for what they believe in.

Raise your hand if you’re building a little future voter! 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️ Which book about making a difference is a favorite on your child’s bookshelf? Please comment VOTE if you’d like this list of books sent to your DMs

Texans, last day to register to vote is October 5th. I dream of a future for Texans where we care for all people and support our public education. #talarico @jamestalarico
