One roll. No retakes. No edit. No sound. No idea what’s on it until it screens. 🎞️

I’m entering @straight_8_ with a film about music from a Deaf point of view. It’s music you feel through the floor instead of hearing it.

The film is a co-production between @deafrave and @version_musictv , and we shoot it at Deaf Rave on 31 October.

The camera is a Braun Nizo Professional, which is older than some of my lenses. The stock is Kodak 500T, plus a lot of hope.

I’ll post behind-the-scenes clips here as we go, mostly so there’s evidence I tried if it all comes back black.

The full story is in my newsletter, link in bio.

Update: the empty camera now has film in it.
A friend donated some expired Super 8, so this is the test roll before the real one. 50 feet. 3 minutes 20 seconds. Edited in camera, in order, in one go. No retakes, no sound, no idea if any of it will come out.
Day job: @sonyprofilmmaking Burano. This month: a camera older than most the crew.

Thanks to my sponsor @andyreik for donating the film to create this reel 🙏🏽

Heard the founder of straight 8 on the radio talking about films shot on one roll of Super 8. No edits, no retakes, no sound.
Bought the camera that afternoon.
Haven’t bought the film yet. Baby steps.
Making a silent film about music, at a Deaf rave, on 3 minutes 20 seconds of film. Follow along to see if I actually load it.

LOOKING FOR A DEAF MUSIC PRODUCER

I’m making a short film on one roll of Super 8. It’s 3 minutes 20 seconds, edited in camera, with no retakes and no sound.

It’s about a young Deaf performer at their first rave, and it’s being shot with the brilliant @deafrave crew on 31 October.

Super 8 records no sound, so the soundtrack gets made separately. I’d love it to come from a Deaf producer who knows how music feels: bass you get through the floor, not just through your ears.

Honest bit: there’s a small budget. This one’s for the love, not the money. You’ll get full credit and the finished film, and I’ll shout about your work wherever it screens.

If that’s you, or someone you know, DM me or drop a comment. Shares very welcome.

Twenty years in and the monitor-in-frame shot still gets me every time. In real life it’s cables, a drum kit and a band wondering how many more takes we need. On the monitor it’s a cathedral.

I’d love to say that’s all down to me. Mostly it’s the window.

From stage to rehearsal room to the streets of @nhcarnivalldn . ❤️💛💚

A showreel by @versionmusictv capturing Ijó Ìdílé – Rooted & Rising across three key moments: our Pre-Carnival Night at @thefoxandfirkin , the final rehearsal with the full company, and the parade at Notting Hill Carnival 2026.

Rooted in community, the project brought together @mac_dende @paimmarivaldo , @reggaechoir , singers @bea_shantifa_music @alehsoul , choreographers @hawahsambafro @adrianooliveiradanza @rosariagracia guest groups @oya_batucada @someoneatthedoorsamba @northsomersetsamba @community_drumming @sambasisterscollective @batukatabatucada , children and dancers from across the UK and beyond. Through a special collaboration of voices, movement and rhythm, months of shared preparation came alive in performance.

The result: Dendê Nation took 1st place in the Brazilian Bands category at Notting Hill Carnival 2026, following our win in 2025. 🏆🥁

Thanks to @version_musictv & team @ian_mann_films_stuff @brucebasudde @shotbyshadrach for documenting the journey from rehearsal room to road.

Second year running and they still let @version_musictv back on the float 🎉

Massive love to @1dende.nation and @gandaiaorg Productions for having me and the @version_musictv crew back at Carnival.

New addition this year: @reggaechoir . Combined with the drummers, the costumes and the singers, it was basically sensory overload in the best way possible.

Another unreal weekend celebrating Afro Caribbean culture. Same time next year? 🎶

ONE MINUTE OF PURE @nhcarnivalldn VIBES! 🔥🥁💚💛❤️

In 2025, we had the privilege of welcoming @version_musictv a creative music platform showcasing exceptional talent from around the globe to capture Dendê Nation on the road at Notting Hill Carnival.

And THIS is what they saw. 🎥✨

The movement, drums, colours, community, joy, resistance & the energy that can only be Carnival.

We’re so happy to announce that @version_musictv will be with us once again in 2026, documenting another chapter of our journey. What a gift to have their lens with us as we celebrate and honour this historic year: 60 years of existence & resistance at Notting Hill Carnival.

From last year’s memories to what is about to come… the countdown is ON. 🔥

Two weeks to go! Are you ready?
