Part 1 of my anticon appreciation posts. a lot of people are sharing their anticon records and stories, so i‘m just joining in. For me, it was the most important record label and collective. This collective of artists changed the way I listened to music and inspired me to start making beats myself. I‘m glad that I had the chance to see a lot of them live on tour in Europe and that for the most part, they are still putting out music and keep doing what they‘re doing. #ripaliasofanticon #ripdaxpierson

“Catch Us Before We Fall Off: a [ch]oral history of anticon.” is about the underground insurgency that took place as we approached the new millennium. As such, the two volumes tell the story of anticon, but they also tell the story of the entire movement - the story of hip-hop at its most experimental, avant-garde, and adventurous. Even if you aren’t a fan of anticon, I’ve placed their story in the context of - and in conversation with - myriad other underground rappers, producers, and DJs (and even some daring aboveground ones). I wrote these books with not only the diehards in mind, but for hip-hop heads of all persuasions. Nobody has written about the underground with this level of scrutiny and analysis before. “Catch Us Before We Fall Off: a [ch]oral history of anticon.” COVER REVEAL 💀 Cover paintings by the incomparable @aaronhorkey [a.k.a. abuse] The cover paintings are from the same period of time that abuse did the “Hip-Hop Music for the Advanced Listener” and “Music for the Advancement of Hip Hop” compilations. The painting that forms the basis for Volume 1 likely used the same enamel paint. Eternally grateful for Aaron’s willingness to dig around in the archives and resurrect these pieces for this distinct purpose. (He also discusses his involvement with anticon and his artwork in the books as well!) The books are for sale on September 29, 2026.
