Week 7?!
278.51mi, 20,643ft

How was this week 7 oh my goodness. This week was just pure delight and directly juxtaposed our experience in the basin. We rolled out of there like a bat out of hell and our Wyoming chapter came to a close. It was gorgeous but our time there was definitely up… it seems Colorado knew it too, as it greeted us with breathtaking scenery and the most lovely new friends. On Sunday, we met Vojtěch and Ollie, who rode alongside us for a few miles on our way out of the basin. We bumped into each other again the next day at Brush Mountain Lodge, a bikepackers oasis, and caught up about our rides for the 24 hours we were apart. We also met Madeline, who perfectly completed their trio. From there, it seemed we were stuck like glue, and our two trios became one hodgepodge group of six. We rode (and hiked our bikes a Metric Ton) to Steamboat Springs and, after a little mix up, stayed at the same Warm Showers (shoutout Patrick and Bex for graciously hosting and cooking for all six of us!!!)! From there, the views were stellar, the wildlife delivered (Anne saw her first bears ever this week!!!!!), and the motivation to camp with our new friends— who are nothing short of exceptional— was at an all time high. There is something truly magic about these three, so much so that we pulled our first night ride of the trip just to be able to share a sweet morning in camp with them. Perhaps some of it may be driven by Vojtêch’s French press or scrambled eggs. Who’s to say really???

Week 7 delivered plenty a sweet brekkie chat, hot springs soaks, and gas station chills. Maybe I’m jumping the gun n speaking for us all but this was by far my favorite week of the trip so far. -Meg

We ended the week by rolling into Frisco, where @ella_peterson met us (🧡😁🧡😁🧡), and where we also spent a record 7 hours at a brewery <3. Needless to say a rest day followed. We played volleyball and made the most divine dinner with Ella’s home grown MELON… crazy work for people that are lowk vitamin deprived these days.

Thank you Virgil and your family for offering up an amazing place to rest, where we got to feel at least a little bit human again. Talk about Trail Angel🧡

We’ve got an update from @very__odd , and one thing is for certain: her Sunliner is covering miles and miles.

Madeline broke in her new Sunliner on a recent journey from Jasper to Banff. 200 miles through the Canadian Rockies, home to more glaciers than you can count. Her sister came along for this preparatory trek, which Madeline treated as her pre-divide training. This trip resulted in that all too familiar soreness settling back into her legs, and excitement for the adventure to come.

Then came the Great Divide, and the first week was full of nothing but surprises. Day one threw singletrack at her before she even knew whether she’d be on dirt or asphalt. She passed a grizzly at a respectful distance, a fair reminder of just how wild this route is, and turned down a lift to escape the big guy, trusting a little sense and some bear spray instead. Slowly the track eased into gravel forest service road and, post grizzly encounter, her confidence came back.

A few more days through Canada and she crossed into Montana, riding into heavy smoke and hoping for a bit of rain to give the burning lands some relief.

Through all of it, the Sunliner has been holding up like a charm on rough roads. That’s the whole point. A bike so dialed you can spend your energy on grizzlies and glaciers instead of your rig.

Give @very__odd a follow to see where the divide takes her. The adventure is just getting started.

Wyoming?

More like Wy is everything so fucking far away.

after the briefest of soujourns in the potato state of Idaho we cycled up and over our first national park, the Grand Tetons. The smoke of our first two weeks finally gave way to some of the best views we have had all journey. As exhaustingly tall as they were busy with tourists we moved quickly onto Wyoming's vast expansive south.

A quick resupply in Pinedale before a dash to the doorstep of the Basin in Atlantic City
( population 57 )

Tomorrow we set off towards a 250km isolated stretch in North Americas largest desert, and our longest stint without water or food through the middle of Wyoming's Great Basin.

Big up Stacey and Marti Martinez at the Grubstake, Atlantic City for your Hospitality.

Saw the end of Montana and the briefest of stints in Idaho.

The last week has been made up of lots of long days on the road in an effort to both avoid wildfires and make up time lost due to some last minute re-routing in order to stay away from the smoke.

The nature of the journey as a whole seems to be a continuous carousel of contractions and expansions, you spend two days packed tightly into dense woodland and the following two you spend in a̶b̶s̶o̶l̶u̶t̶e̶l̶y̶ ̶f̶u̶c̶k̶ ̶a̶l̶l̶ an enormously wide expanse that completely justifies the States Big Sky moniker. I think this ongoing opening and closing is what gives this route it's character. It never settles for too long so there is always a sense of incompleteness, a next something to be worked on or through.

With less than a day left in Idaho, we look forward to Wyoming, the Tetons and the infamous Basin.

Big shout out Lama Ranch, Larry, Lois and MTB city in Helena for your amaOng hospitality.

Northern Montana

Our journey through the North of the 'treasure state' has seen us wind down the foothills of the Rockies taking us in, over and through ( some typically literal American naming ) Whitefish, Bigfork, Holland lake and now Lincoln.

The forest roads are framed by trees that feel magnitudes taller than the ones we rode through in Canada and made all the more dramatic when set against the segments of wide open farmlands that characterise so much of Montana.

The riding thus far has been more varied in this our first of the 5 American states on the great divide, with the route taking us off the dusty gravel roads and deeper still into grizzly territory and onto single track which has provided the most dramatic riding of the journey so far. These sections never last too long but with dense bush brushing either side of your handlebars theres very much a feeling of being in their backyard.

We said goodbye to Rob ( easily my 3rd favourite Canadian I've met on the route) and said hello to Madeline. As it stands we're traveling as a Czech, a Brit and a Yank which reads as a bad punchline.

So far Montana has been in generous in people, weather, landscape and wildlife. Hoping for more as we close in on the 1000km mark since Banff.

In September 2023 I rode down the East Coast of South Korea and around Jeju Island with my little sister @very__odd. I finally made the reel I envisioned please clap (this is a way latergram im sorry for any confusion). Since then she has done a year+ bike tour from China to Sweden( (links and reels in her bio!!)! She's on to do the great divide next and I'm joining her from Jasper to Banff Canada! I'm excited to see the Canadian Rockies and do another bike tour with my sis.

Madeline Hryse hasn’t had a home address in four years.

Three years walking across Asia. One year cycling solo from southern China to Sweden — through Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and a dozen countries most of us couldn’t find on a map. She says stable life scares her more than being alone in a foreign country ever did.

This week on Trail Stories: a Kyrgyzstan mountain pass that made her the most unpleasant person alive for exactly one day, the skill she had to learn the hard way about staying safe alone, and a piece of string from a hostel free pile that got her through the Pamir Mountains.

Hollywood would call it a midlife crisis. Madeline calls it Tuesday.
