The Architecture of Being Seen

I almost did not post this.

Not because I doubted the work, but because it is not the standard practice of Soren Studio, and I wanted to protect that.

In collaboration with the Brooks, I created the centerpiece for their Met Gala Watch Party, answering this year's theme, "Costume Art, Fashion Is Art."

And that is the question I kept returning to. If fashion is art, then what is a garment really doing? It is not decoration. It is composition. A garment holds line and weight and color the way a painting does, only it moves, only it breathes, only it becomes part of the person wearing it. Art you can stand inside.

So I built two figures. Two truths. Because a woman is never only one thing.

One crowned in gold and roses, rising out of a garden. One wrapped in emerald and soft ivory, quiet and modern and turned slightly away. One from history. One from now. Both of them art. Both of them true.

For me, art and fashion have never been separate. They have always lived in the same room, spoken the same language, shaped each other. And some time ago, before Soren Studio, I also worked in costume, with fabric in my hands, learning how a garment can build a character before a word is spoken. That chapter never left me. This project invited it back into the room.

None of this would have taken shape without art consultant @khara.woods who I collaborate with often and trust deeply and @upholsteredstudio, who translated it into cloth. I asked for something both abstract and literal. Upholstered Studio made it real.

I was stretched. I was excited. I made something I am proud of.

So here they are. Both of them. Both true.

When did you last do something outside what people expected of you? 👇

This Mother’s Day, we’re introducing Anja Aronowsky Cronberg @vestojco_op , editor, writer, founder of Vestoj magazine, and a mother. Having spent years thinking carefully about what clothes
mean, she shares, in her own words, why they matter.

Here’s to the ones who taught us that beauty lives in both comfort and intention.

Happy Mother’s Day.

Why are blue jeans so popular? Today on The Mortar we're sharing a story from @vestojco_op, written by anthropologist Professor Daniel Miller, and getting to the heart of what you're really saying when you reach for that favourite pair of jeans. Head over to The Mortar to read the article (link in bio). And massive thanks to @izzy.illo for this lovely vision of Matisse in denim.
