Kai tip for the gorge…
If you keep doing the SAME thing, don’t expect a DIFFERENT result. If you want to get faster or more efficient at surfing, you can’t expect to get there by doing the same thing you always do.

Go for an easy paddle, and don’t worry about speed. Practice catching swells and experiment on them. How easily can I catch this swell? What if I angle my boat a little bit this way or that way? What if I start pushing for the bump later? What if I stop paddling at the top? All these things are good things to try/practice. You’ll never know what you don’t know until you know.

Understanding catching bumps in its simplest form is the only way to get better. The simplest form I can think of is a ball rolling down a hill. You (your center of mass) are the ball, and the wave is the hill. The bigger the wave the bigger the hill, the smaller the wave the smaller the hill. What will the ball do if I roll it down the hill vs. just letting go on its own? One will reach the bottom of the hill faster than the other. But is that what you want? Do I want to get to the bottom of the wave faster or do I want to ride it and let it carry me? How do I get the ball to roll down easier?

So, think of yourself and your canoe as the ball, and the wave/swell as the hill. Think of what you want the ball to do. Do you want it to go down as fast as it can? Will that cost energy? What happens when I reach the bottom? Will there be another “hill” forming or is the ball now stuck at the bottom and now have to roll it back up the hill? See you guys on the water or at the gorge…

Good feeling Friday

First couple days back into it after taking November off, and 2 weeks in Japan. Mostly working feeling, but also timing and pressure in the bumps. Here’s to the start of a new season.

Who’s gonna be in Oceanside this weekend? I’ll see you there.

You hear Hawaii Kai and you think Hawaii Kai run. I think of the wall.

Since being in a paddling slump, I’ve decided to take it back to the roots of where I learned how to paddle. This is where I learned how to surf and feel the ocean and I used to go up the wall almost every day no matter the conditions. You are forced to rely on feeling more than sight and are forced to react quickly because of how choppy it is. I always tell people that if you can surf the wall going both ways, you can surf anything…

4 weeks till gorge, see you there

Kai’s tip for the weekend???
Go with the flow…
In any type of paddling but especially in ocean conditions, you wanna go with the flow…(as much as makes sense). Try not to fight the environment and surroundings conditions, use them to your advantage. Follow the swell whether it’s going in or out; and find angles that fit
1) the direction you’re trying to go
2) your ability to ride it and maintain control and boat speed.

For downwind races you wanna think about the conservation of energy and maintaining speed for as long as you can. The longer you can maintain a high(er) speed the less energy you have to output to catch the next bump and the next bump. Some bumps require more speed and energy than others so you have to read the situation and use your judgment. You can see me slowing down on some bumps by dragging my hand to maintain that constant flow in order to not run into the bump in front.

So, go with the flow and use the surrounding conditions to your advantage. Think about the conservation of energy and maintaining boat speed to make it easier to continue catching and connecting bumps. The only way to get better at it is to keep doing it over and over again.
5 weeks till the gorge, see you guys there…
