I started my weight loss journey at 375lbs in February 2025, I hit a milestone this week of being solidly under the 250lb mark. That’s 125lbs lost or a 1/3rd of my total starting body weight in 20 months. People always try to give you motivation about the work you are putting in the effort you are putting in and it’s hard to listen to that sometimes because I see this as debt, years of my kids and wife’s life where dad couldn’t do this or that. The motivation that makes the impact is the love and support of friends and family willing to get in the trenches and struggle with you, so since you don’t get the credit let me thank you now. @spacebunsbjj @the_real_deal_85 @ragnardamighty @brushnovice @veterans_breakthrough @12stjiujitsu @josemunoz88

First tournament in the books. Really went after emulating my mentor @the_real_deal_85, 3rd in a 3 man bracket lol. Not the desired outcome but learned some new things and got to compete with my kids which is something I never expected. Big shout out to @veterans_breakthrough this is just a warm up for that stacked bracket Nov 7 Veterans Breakthrough No Gi tournament. Go Sign Up!

Kara went 2-0 at AZBJJL on Saturday, with one submission and one win by points! 🥇💜

And we are SO proud of this girl.

This was only her second tournament, and stepping into a bigger competition than her first one at @veterans_breakthrough was a pretty big ask.

We only require her to compete in one gi and one no gi tournament a year, both through Veterans Breakthrough. So @azbjjleague was a bonus tournament and an opportunity to challenge herself beyond what we normally ask of her.

She was confident, sure of herself, and played her top game exactly the way she’s been training it.

Honestly, seeing her walk onto those mats with that kind of confidence was incredible.

And a huge thank you goes to Coach @josemunoz88 at 12th St. BJJ for seeing the gold medalist in her long before she could see it in herself, and for working with her to build that confidence. 💜

She’s grown so much since we moved to @12stjiujitsu in January, both in her jiu jitsu and in how she carries herself.

But you know what made me even prouder than the wins?

How she treated her opponent.

She introduced herself before the match, complimented the girl’s shoes (because apparently we’re making friends before trying to strangle each other 😂), and bowed while shaking the opposing coach’s hand after her first win.

She was friendly, humble, and respectful from beginning to end.

And THAT is the biggest win for us.

Winning is exciting. Gold medals are awesome. But winning or losing, the way you treat people matters.

That’s the kind of competitor we want her to become, and she showed us that repeatedly on Saturday.

The medal is pretty cool, too, though. 😂🥇

And if you look closely at the photos, you might catch her Lil’ Jiu Jitsu Monster set from Uncle Retro at @retrograpplershop peeking through! 💜

Next up, she’s registered for the Veterans Breakthrough No-Gi Tournament next month!

She’s still looking for an opponent in the Junior White Belt division, under 121 lbs!

If you know a young lady who wants to compete, let’s get these girls a match! 💜

Ladies. LADIES. We need to talk. 💜

We’re always asking for more opportunities for women in jiu jitsu.

More tournaments.
More weight classes.
More competitors.
More chances to compete against women our own size.

And I’m absolutely here for it, but here’s where I need y’all to help me understand something.

Veterans Breakthrough is offering female competitors 30% OFF tournament registration.

That’s LESS THAN $70.

And right now?

SIX women are registered, and NOT ONE has another competitor in her bracket.

SIX. 😭

We have women ready to compete, but nobody for them to compete against.

We can’t keep asking for more opportunities and expect them to grow if we aren’t participating.

And before someone says money is the issue, there’s another option!

Raise $100 for Veterans Breakthrough and earn FREE tournament entry! 😮

I’m not saying everyone has the ability or circumstances to compete.

But if you’ve been looking for an opportunity?

HERE IT IS.

And your registration supports Veterans Breakthrough’s mission of improving veterans’ mental health through jiu jitsu.

Tournament organizers can create divisions, offer more weight classes, and lower registration fees.

But they can’t fill those brackets for us.

So ladies, let’s show up for the opportunities we want to see grow.

Already registered? Let’s find you an opponent.

Thinking about competing? SIGN UP.

Know a woman who competes? TAG HER.

Can’t compete? SHARE THIS.

Six women have already said yes.

Let’s give them somebody to compete against. 💜

Check out @veteransbreakthrough for registration and discount details.

Spacebuns out ✌️

“Far better is it to dare mighty things,
to win glorious triumphs,
even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much,
because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.”

—Theodore Roosevelt

Don’t live in the “gray twilight.” Dare mighty things.
