For 18 continuous years, independent dance artists in Leeds have held a space where movement improvisers can come together every month to learn, play and jam. It's not easy to keep unfunded community arts activity going long term so Leeds Contact Improvisation and its previous incarnation Improvisation Exchange are proud to celebrate this achievement with a look back at some old flyers (from pre-canva days!)

Thanks to organisers through the years @vgrasse @d_toure_art @rachel_dean_movement @mariehallagersen @sevensistersgroup @amani_sans_r @lewysholt kathinkawalter @vivienlhowie and @yorkshiredancepictures and @northern_school for generous support

We're on this Sunday so come and dance! All welcome including complete beginners

Microbial Lovesongs

This October, Bioart Society SOLU Space hosts Microbial Lovesongs, an exhibition that coincides with the Centre for the Social Study of Microbes (CSSM) Conference 2026 at the University of Helsinki. Microbial Lovesongs brings together artists who have collaborated with the CSSM over the past five years in experimental artistic residencies at the University, exploring what can come out of artists working with social scientists to develop methods for the social study of microbes, and to embody academic discussions from novel perspectives.
Microbial Lovesongs emphasises the art-science engagements without limiting the art to the structures of university space and its traditions, to expand possibilities of knowing with microbes. Rather than illustrating microbial science, the physical items and processes in the gallery space materialise it: installations you can lie down inside and listen to, sculptural forms shaped by fermentation, and pieces built from somatic practice and direct exposure to microbial worlds. These are less objects to observe than environments to feel and think with.
The exhibition treats knowledge-making itself as a sensory, embodied act — testing what art can know that text cannot, and what happens when social-scientific inquiry lets itself be shaped by processes as slow and unruly as fermentation, decay, and growth. Inspired by the leaky, transforming character of the holobiont (a human-microbial consortium), the works in the SOLU Space are designed to entangle one another and morph throughout the conference. The exhibition itself performs the permeability it describes.

The exhibition will be open to the public 23–30 October, Friday–Friday: 12:00–17:00; closed Monday.

What can a single drop of Baltic Sea water teach us?

Last week, @vgrasse @maija_annikki @repettisonja @teemu_lehmusruusu and I gathered in Nagu, in the Turku Archipelago, for a day of exchanges across artistic research and the social and natural sciences. Together, we explored different ways of knowing and sensing water.
We collected water samples from the Baltic Sea and looked at them under the microscope. Within a single drop, entire worlds emerged: phytoplankton, cyanobacteria, dinoflagellates, and countless other microscopic organisms - revealing the complexity and vitality of the waters we so often take for granted.
Our conversations moved between microscopy and movement, scientific observation and artistic practice, asking how we might make sense of water differently. We shared work spanning performance, choreography and somatics, site-responsive practice, visual arts, photography, diving, and interdisciplinary research on marine ecosystems and algal blooms.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who brought their unique perspectives and practices and made their way to Nagu despite the heavy rain.

A reminder that meaningful conversations often happen where disciplines meet and where curiosity leads us to look more closely, whether through a microscope, with our bodies, or through artistic practice.

Here’s to many more encounters across waters, disciplines, and ways of knowing 🌊

SUOM (ENG ⬇️)
Teimme pikku luokkaretki Turkuun @fernorchestra:n Valaankasvattaja tapahtuma - osallistuimme Keijusto-teoksen punontaan langasta, jonka oli tehty ruskeista levistä eristetyistä alginaatista (värjätty Spiruliina-sinilevällä, punajurella ja ruusumarjalla). Keijusto, eli plankton, kuvaa eliöt, jotka keijuvat - lipuvat vapaasti veden virtojen mukana 💙
Päivä päättyi Keijunta-yhteisötanssiteoksella: "Keijuston samanlaisuus on maailman tulevaisuus"

Vielä huomenna (lauantaina 13.6.) ehtii mukaan - Turkulaiset ystävät: kannattaa tulla tutustumaan!

ENG (SUOM ⬆️)
We took a field trip today to Turku to check out @fernorchestra's Whale Farmer event - where we contributed to the Keijusto sculpture by knotting and weaving yarn made from alginate, a sugar isolated from brown seaweeds (and coloured with spirulina, beetroot and rosehip). Keijusto is a beautiful Finnish word meaning plankton - the (mostly microscopic) beings that drift with water currents and can't swim against them 💙
We ended the day with the community dance performance Keijunta: "the similarity of plankton is the world's future"

Still on tomorrow (Saturday 13.6.), check it out Turku friends!

Sculpture is one of the most expansive disciplines in the visual arts — shaped by an incredible range of processes, materials, and ideas.

From time-honoured techniques to newly discovered approaches, much of sculpture is deeply material-led. And when it comes to creating work for the outdoors, the challenge becomes even more compelling: how does art endure, evolve, and connect within the elements?

Later this year, our garden will transform into a dynamic exhibition of over 100 sculptures — a celebration of innovation, craft, and creativity across the field.

We can’t wait to see the breadth of submissions from artists.

To apply, see our pinned Open Call post and visit the link in our bio.

Deadline: 7 April.

🌿 PLANT DREAMING EVENT: Join a movement-based and multidisciplinary workshop to experience some of the practices and questions that underpin Vanessa Grasse’s upcoming Elysia performance, which will take place on the following weekend.
Workshop is on Saturday 21 March in Central Court from 11.30am until 1.30pm.

Through creative and somatic guided movement explorations and engagement with natural materials, you are invited to explore ideas of hybridity, microbial interdependence, plant-human relations and multispecies embodiment. The workshop offers time to move, play, reflect, draw and explore with materials, both individually and together.

No prior experience is required. The workshop takes place in Central Court, which is a public space. Movers, creative practitioners of all disciplines, and anyone curious are welcome.
Please see link 🔗 in our bio to book in advance to reserve a spot, free to take part.

Vanessa Grasse @vgrasse is a multidisciplinary artist, choreographer, performer, teacher, somatic coach, and curator. Her work explores the intersection between choreography, somatics, sculpture and waking-art, creating site-responsive and participatory performances that connect us to our landscapes, ecosystems and communities.

Thanks to @aceagrams for their support.
