POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

October is Filipino American History Month. It is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In our house those are not two separate conversations.

Breast cancer is rising faster in Asian American and Pacific Islander women than in any other group in this country. In women under fifty, cases are up about half since 2000. I did not learn that in school. I learned it as an adult, reading about women who look like my mother and my aunties.

Here is the part most people have not heard. Screening starts at forty now. It used to be fifty. The recommendation changed in 2024 and nobody really announced it, so a lot of women in their forties still think they have time.

I will go first, since that is what we do here. My genetic testing came back with an elevated risk for breast cancer. I have said that publicly already. I went and had my mammogram and it was clear.

Clear is good news. Clear is not the same as done. About half of women over forty have dense breast tissue, which raises risk and also makes a mammogram harder to read, because dense tissue and tumors both show up white. Your report has to tell you your density now. Most women get that line and have no idea what to do with it.

What to do about it is a conversation, not a protocol. It depends on your history, your risk, your density. That is the part worth sitting down for.

So this is the ask. If you are past forty and you have not been, go. If your report said dense and nobody explained it, bring it in and we will go through it with you.

We check on our titas. This is what that looks like.
