"The future of medicine starts with us."

When Tobi Oyedele posted a video on social media about being one of the few Black men in his university science classes and research labs, messages poured in from other aspiring medical students across Canada and beyond who shared similar experiences.

The response inspired the fourth-year @viccollege student to co-found @nxtgenmedicine, a student-led network connecting pre-med students with peers, physicians and health-care leaders across Ontario.

Heartbreaking and devastating 😭💔 I'm still not over the ending of Switzy. Despite this book's mega-depressing plot, I'm so glad I read this story. Thank you Penguin Random House Canada @penguinrandomca for the gifted copy 📖✨

Spoilers ahead!

I'm super sorry, I really tried, but I found it really difficult to discuss the essence of this book without discussing plot specifics.

Switzy is about David, a former executive who takes his final trip, tying up loose ends and saying goodbye to his daughter in London, meeting an old school friend in Paris, before reaching his final destination, Switzerland, where he plans to end his life through medically assisted suicide. With his mind deteriorating from Alzheimer's, David's past and present frequently intertwine as he contemplates his life and decisions during this final stage.

The writing in Switzy is so skilful and precise that I felt as if I were really in David's head. I felt his frustration at losing competency in everyday tasks, his anxiety and fear at the gaps in his memory, and his distress at finding himself in strange places and situations. Most of all, I felt his sadness and hopelessness at having to choose between living a life of unimaginable pain and death. David's last scene was heavy with grief and fear, but also acceptance and bravery.

However, despite all the heaviness above, David is an extremely witty character, and I loved his often humorous trains of thought and comical way of looking at the world. This novel artfully balanced pain and humour, fear and love. Because, at the end of his life, there were people who loved and cared for him, a theme emphasised throughout the novel. At the end of our lives, work and money aren't what we think about, but rather how we treated our loved ones, who we were there for, who was there for us, and human connection.

You might laugh, you will almost definitely cry, but I still recommend Switzy to anyone up for it ❤️📚

It was a pleasure chatting with @spaikin at his installation as the 15th Chancellor of @viccollege on its momentous 190th birthday.

The university has long been a vibrant hub in our community for thoughtful engagement and dialogue. I know Chancellor Paikin will embody that spirit in this well-deserved role.

Amanda (and Stu!) looking effortlessly beautiful at U of T before kicking off the party at @lapalmato It was so cool to witness all the joy and love from the community of friends these two have built. In my experience at least, it’s rare to hang onto friendships through so many seasons of life. But these two have that in spades. 🫶 What a fun-filled day to be part of!
