I have been thinking lately about the particular kind of freedom that still exists in parts of South Los Angeles, West Adams being a case in point.

Some of my earliest memories of this part of the city are from driving with my sister and stepsisters to visit my stepfather’s mother, Mrs. Gravelly, in Leimert Park on weekends. We would drive through West Adams, and I remember being struck by the houses and gardens, but just as much by the people who animated the streets, especially on a late Sunday morning. There was a particular elegance to it all, architectural and social at once, that I noticed long before I had the language to understand why it affected me.
The history of racism, exclusion and disinvestment cannot be separated from what these neighborhoods are today, nor can the physical interventions that reshaped them. And yet, within that history of being overlooked, a certain amount of room has remained.

Room to experiment. Room to make something before everyone has agreed that it is a good idea.

An artist can follow an instinct before it has been polished into something easily understood. A shopkeeper can open something deeply personal and a building can remain a little odd. At their best, these businesses do not feel as though they have arrived in anticipation of what the neighborhood might become. They feel connected to what is already here.

There is a kind of creative life that becomes increasingly difficult in neighborhoods where every square foot has been optimized and every rough edge made presentable. I do not mean to romanticize neglect. There is a real history behind why these neighborhoods were underestimated, and real consequences that followed. There is also a longer conversation about whose eye is given authority, and whether the people who already live there recognize that authority as valuable.

This is part of its particular appeal. The houses, businesses and lives that have endured through periods of attention and neglect alike, leaving room for things to remain a little unresolved, a little overlooked and entirely themselves.

This is by no means a complete portrait of West Adams. Just places and businesses I frequent.

Day 190: Brunch in West LA was a success at Vicky’s! We started with an iced latte and the avocado egg rolls, and that plum sauce had us scraping the plate. 🤤

Our favorites:
🥑 Avocado Egg Rolls
🌶️ Chicken Chilaquiles
🧇 Chicken & Waffles
🥪 Vicky’s Breakfast (the pastrami is a must!)

If you’re looking for a hearty brunch with generous portions and classic comfort food, add this spot to your list.

📍Vicky’s – 5410 W Adams Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90016

Would you build a pastrami sandwich with the toast or eat everything separately? Let me know below! 👇

{Los Angeles－Vicky’s All Day}

這次二度點了 Shakshouka 和 Avocado Eggroll，另外第一次試了 Brioche French Toast with Banana Cream。

Avocado Eggroll

We ordered shakshuka, French toast with banana cream, and avocado egg rolls. The shakshuka had a rich tomato sauce with soft eggs, the French toast was crispy outside and soft inside, and the avocado egg rolls were crispy and creamy. Everything was delicious, and we really enjoyed the meal.
