Throwback to a fab stay in the #LandOfDionysus, exploring the city and region of Drama in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Greece. 💖 Apart from offering warm hospitality and amazing Greek food - arguably one of my favourite cuisines in the world, this part of Greece is also where the cult of Dionysus, god of wine and several other profound pleasures - arguably one of my favourite deities 😁, is said to have originated. One more reason why it had been on my 'to visit' list for a while ... I certainly found a fascinating wine region there, in a surge of discovering/developing an identity of its own. Building on viticultural roots in antiquity, but with many setbacks due to phylloxera and during times of war, from the late 1970s, a number of pioneers started to invest in modern cultivation and winemaking techniques, and conduct experiments to find out which grape varieties had the potential to thrive and produce quality wines. With a landscape as dramatic and diverse as its weather patterns, it's no wonder you find a wide range of grape varieties planted. Initially the local wineries focused on international classics, notably Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Chardonnay. I even tasted surprisingly good Nebbiolo, Tempranillo and Touriga Nacional. But increasingly, these are accompanied, or even replaced, by local varieties, such as Malagousia, Assyrtiko, Xinomavro, Mavroudi, Agiorgitiko, Limnio and Vidiano. The region, which currently only has regional PGI denominations for its wines, is working to get PDO status, i.a. for its typical white blends of Assyrtiko and Sauvignon Blanc. Also worth checking out: the stunning oenotourism facilities at many of the wineries, including art exhibitions, small museums, scenic cellars, modern tasting rooms and beautiful grounds. But also the hiking opportunities, the many historic sites, the annual wine and gastronomy festival Dramoinognosia in May, or the Oneiroupoli Christmas extravaganza in December, could be an excellent reason to pay the region a visit. Yamas! 🌞🥂 _______________________________________ #winetravel #foodandwine #followthewine #discoverdrama
