One week ago today, my mom had a stroke. It was a scary experience. All of us -her kids- were out of state or out of country except for my brother. It just so happened my niece had stayed at my mom’s overnight and returned to check on her after church. Bless my niece and bless my mom, it was caught relatively early. It was a stroke occurring at the base of her brain/back of her head. The theory is that nearly 3 years of chemo and the type of cancer mom has contributed to her platelets being super buff and coagulating too much. But let me tell you this. At no point has my mom stopped being positive. Even when she thought her time was up she was encouraging us kids. She was so sweet when the three of us who were gone made it back. Mom never stopped being kind to the nurses, doctors, aides, and other workers who are helping her at #buffalogeneral. We would have understood if she got snappy. Goodness knows it would be ok, but she didn’t. Mom knew how hard that hospital staff was working because she spent her adult life helping other people as a nurse on an acute care unit, as a mental health nurse, as a clinical coordinator for developmentally disabled adults, and capped it off as a substance abuse counselor and nurse. She was in the trenches and still stayed positive. And goodness knows, those folks are working hard to help not just our mom but so many other folks’ loved ones, too. And there’s no way for you to know this, but my mom’s piano playing is the soundtrack to my life. I hoped she would be able to keep playing (I did learn her positivity habit!) but there was a quiet undercurrent of worry that she might feel like it wasn’t the same playing piano as it had been. That there would be a diminishment of brain-hand coordination that had supplied my soundtrack as long as I could remember. But today, my sis @omnohmglutenfree found a wheelchair and got my mom @cshaffer52 off of her unit on an adventure. They located the grand piano in the hospital and put the minor worry I had about Mama and her piano connection to bed.
