What lies beneath the rainforest?

Around Lango, the forest may look untouched, but just beneath the leaf litter are traces of people who lived here long ago.

In a first for this part of Odzala, a team of archaeologists is uncovering pottery, quartz stone tools, charcoal and other remains that could reveal when people lived here – and whether there were several villages at different times.

There are intriguing questions too. Pottery and stone tools, usually associated with different periods, have been found together. Radiocarbon dating and further analysis will now help the team begin piecing together the timeline.

It’s a hidden chapter in Odzala’s history – and one we’re only just beginning to read.

The research team includes Dr Richard Oslisly and Dr Geoffroy de Saulieu – IRD / Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, Paris, and ANPN; Dr Ernest Bassombi and Dr Nexewa Mongolo Mololi – Université Marien Ngouabi, Brazzaville; and Victor Ammann – University of Lausanne, who is documenting the mission.

I can’t get enough of this majestic bird 😊! Such a fun experience with my friend, scientist/filmmaker Victor during our fun session in the hide. We successfully captured footage of a Goliath heron fishing, and it was truly breathtaking to witness this elusive predator in action. The bird’s determination and precision before striking its prey were mesmerising to observe.

One fascinating fact about the Goliath heron is that it’s the largest heron species in the world, standing up to 1.5 meters. Impressive size and striking plumage. A majestic sight to behold! #congobasin #naturalworld #wildlifephotography #travelphotography #wildlife #goliath #heron

Two top predators of the African rainforest: the African Golden Cat (Caracal aurata) who primarily stalk the forest floor and the African Leopard (Panthera pardus pardus) the solitary king predator of the forest floor and the trees. Repost biologist 📸 @victor_ammann on encountering them for the first time…
・・・

We don’t often hear about the golden cat but this feline also lives in the Congo basin and on the same territory as the leopard. Here is the proof with these two adult males caught in the same place.

Although I am particularly interested in this species, I had never had the chance to see one on my cameras. So this is a big first for me and on top of that in daylight. As for the leopard, I am looking forward to learn more about its territory and its movements.

Termites: the engineers of the Congo forest floor. Repost 📸 @victor_ammann on encountering the mound builders of the forest…
・・・

Here is a small selection of termite mounds that can be found in the Congo basin. The ecology of these social animals fascinates me. They build their solid kingdom at an impressive speed and the diversity of shapes and textures is magnificent. The advantage with termites is that, unlike other animals, they do not flee when approached 🤣 You can therefore observe them very easily! On the other hand, their predators are more difficult to observe. The videos of this giant pangolin were taken in Gabon in 2018. I have not yet succeeded in making a video of a pangolin in Congo and this is perhaps partly due to hunting as this animal is highly sought after.

Yikes! Caught in a bush fire while searching for nocturnal life…It’s wild! Extremely intense! The wildlife scrambling to safety. This bush fires would make my scouting a bit challenging and destructive to some macro species but on the positive note it will be regenerative for the ecosystem. #congobasin #naturalworld #myscoutingdiary #bushfire #wildlifephotography #endangeredspecies #travelphotography
