THROWBACK THURSDAY The Mayali Project - released back in 2020 is an outcome of a two-week Desert Pea Media project with the Gundjeihmi/Kunwinjku community members from Kakadu National Park aka The Kakadu Collective. The project was a unique, collaborative creative process between Desert Pea Media, Red Lily Health (a local Indigenous-led Health Service) and an amazing group of students at the Jabiru Area School, who represent several clan groups of Kakadu and Arnhem Land. Also involved were local community members, Elders, artists, and community organisations. 'Mayali' is the Gundjeihmi/Kunwinjku word for 'cultural knowledge' and is used by several  language groups in the region.  The song was co-directed/written by and features Victor Rostron of Wildfire Munwurrk Band. Hailing from the extremely remote Stone Country of Central Arnhem Land, Victor speaks and sings in the critically endangered aboriginal languages of Dalabon, Kune and Rembarrnga.  A highly respected senior culture man, singer, songwriter, artist and prolific musician, Victor reaches across cultures and holds keys to knowledge that bridges the gap across ancient and contemporary Australia. The overall purpose of the broader project was to facilitate an important, inter-generational conversation about social and emotional well-being for Original Nations young people. Focusing on cultural identity, health and positive choices. Desert Pea Media projects involve a dialogue-based storytelling process that encourages participants to analyze 'the real', 'the ideal' and 'the bridge'. In simple terms this means critically thinking about how to create positive change for yourself, for each other and for our communities. We as a team feel deeply honoured and grateful to learn, share and create with the Jabiru community.  These projects not only uplift and inspire audiences and community members, but everybody involved. Special thanks to the TO's of Jabiru - The Mirrar People, and all of the Clan Groups of Kakadu. As always, we’re humbled and grateful for your trust and support. Add these artists to your rotation this week. ✰ NSW: @heavybend - Birdbrain ‘Birdbrain’ is one of two debut singles from Sydney project Heavy Bend. I hear a touch of The Strokes classic sound in this one: moody & melancholic yet effortlessly slick and upbeat. Love! ✰ VIC: @kaviitaaaaa - Empty With The… OBSESSED! A soulful, jazzy DnB number from Naarm artist Kaviita. This song is about realising when a relationship has run its course and finding liberation in that moment of recognition and release. ✰ QLD: @monsieurmellow - Paris Strut Okayyy this is right up my alley! A debut release from Callum MacDonald’s new solo project, Monsieur Mellow. A floaty disco groove with a Caribbean twist. ✰ WA: @blushbabyblush - EMBARRASSED 4 U Had a head-bang moment over my morning coffee with the company of this track. This Boorloo four-piece pack serious punch in the form of girly grunge. ✰ SA: @mycherie_music - Dishes in the sink My Chérie is a singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/producer living in Kaurna Land. This song comes from her latest EP, “Life is short life is long”. Big fan of the switch up at 1.50 after being stripped back for the most part. ✰ ACT: @its_miyazawa - Say it Like Miya Zawa has chosen to share aural manifestations and ideas from their diary with you in this dubby harmonic pop piece. ✰ NT: WILDFIRE MANWURRK, @victor_rostron - Ranger Boat From the ultra-remote stone country of Central Arnhem Land, this hard rock band balance punchy electric guitar with insightful lyricism. A series of Desert Pea Media productions from the communities of Kuranda QLD, Kakadu NT, Maningrida NT and Walgett NSW have the honour of being invited to represent Australia at the WORLD EXPO in Osaka, Japan this month until October! "More than 150 countries and regions will gather under the Expo theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives”. These four DPM productions will play multiple times every day at the Australian Pavilion from April 13th - October 13th, 2025. "Australia’s unique energy inspired the theme, “Chasing the Sun”. “A songline is born” 2 years ago, we engaged a team to spend time with our membership and local people discussing what their self-identified cultural preservation proirities were. From those discussions, the Mibbarr Songline Project was concieved. “wayini wam nameke ngadjare yidurndiwemen yawurrinj ngungke wurduhwurdurd ngdjare ngamirndenan kure nane darrme The songline. I want that, return, your young boys and kids. I want to see a group at this spot. kure kunborrk darrme kure nadjamun darrme ngarrku nawu ngarrwayini At the dancing spot. At the sacred place. Ours, that we’ll sing about. en kawayini ngarriwayini en kunborrk ngarrimarnbun own en ngarridjare durndeng wudurd kurrmehkurrmeng kure koltja ngarrbinnan And it will sing. We’ll sing and we’ll make our own dance. And we want return. And the kids will all be put into the culture we show them.” Jack Nawilil We are incredibly proud to celebrate the success of this landmark innovative project and emergence of a new songline in the central western Arnhem Land region. This remarkable outcome is testimony to the integrity in which our teams worked alongside cultural custodians of the story. A legacy project that will reverberate for generations to come.
