Things Instagram Doesn’t Show You About Travelling Solo: ft my blistering face.

It took us four days to hike to Machu Picchu. The weather was cloudy, interspersed with bits of sunshine here and there. Rain was pretty much consistent. I didn’t think about topping up my suncream because it was so grey and vile outside. I didn’t think about how dumb that would be because not only should you always wear SPF but at high altitude the sun is so much stronger.

I woke up on the third day of camping with a totally swollen face. I thought I’d been bitten by a Peruvian spider because I could barely open my eye and started panicking that after all this trekking, I’d go blind and wouldn’t be able to see the one thing I’d been hiking to see.

After emptying the whole bottle of Aftersun on my face, I realised that actually I was an idiot and I’d burnt my face off and quite possibly my eyes too.

Here’s some great photos of Machu Picchu, some awesome guys I met and hiked with and my swollen face.

EMILY’S EYES VIRTUALLY EXPLORE..PERU 🇵🇪 Let’s explore Machu Picchu, another Wonder of the World.

1. One of the most beautiful, archaeological sites discovered as evidence of the Inca empire, built around 1450.
2. MP was abandoned when the Inca Empire was conquered by the Spaniards in the 16th century. The ruins were discovered in 1911.
3. The city is divided into a lower & upper part, separating farming from residential areas.
4. MP is located in the Cusco Region.Book accommodation in Cusco and arrive 3 days before to acclimatise.I stayed at @pariwanahostels and loved it-cool people, comfy beds & great brekkie.
5. MP stands at 2,430m above sea level.I had a panic attack thinking I would die of altitude sickness on the hike, surrounded by llamas, but I survived to tell the tale. Chewing on an ABUNDANCE of coca leaves and spraying Agua de Kanang onto both hands which I then breathed in, helped me lots. Both products are available in local shops.
6. Loads of companies offer tours. Those provided by the hostel are reputable but pricy. MANY people booked their tour through agencies in Cusco. Unfortunately, people were ripped off by fake companies who charged them less and had a terrible experience. When they tried to get their money back, the company mysteriously “shut down”.DO your research on tour companies.
7. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. I paid slightly more and had the best experience of my life.I used @bambaexperience and @percygonza our tour guide, stayed with me when I struggled & celebrated my wins when I could hike for hours. The chef was fab with my food allergies & I couldn’t reccomend them more. LOTS of “Influencers” post their MP experiences and the beautiful accommodation. That’s very nice and I believe @salkantaytrekking offer more luxury but I wanted an outdoor experience, camping in fields.
8.MP is shut during Feb.
9. There are three treks to choose from. I chose LARES.
9. Pack layers, good hiking boots,a windbreaker & small first aid kit (you’re going to get ACHY after the hiking!)
10. 675 guests will be allowed in per day to comply with social distancing when MP reopens in July.
My post MIND VS MACHU PICCHU is on my blog 🌍(love a good plug!) HAPPY TRAVELS! 😘
