Following the successful relaunch of Artspace’s International Curators Program (ICP) through a recent visit by Naomi Beckwith, Deputy Director and Jennifer and David Stockman Chief Curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, and Artistic Director of documenta 16, Artspace is pleased to announce the second iteration of the 2026 ICP in partnership with Mori Art Museum’s Global Art Development (GAD) Project. The program continues Artspace’s commitment to research-led exchange, curatorial dialogue, meaningful connections between local and international communities, and long-term international partnership.

Through this partnership, Artspace and the Mori Art Museum GAD Project will jointly host a visiting delegation of 10 Japan-based emerging curators and 4 curatorial mentors for a series of studio visits, professional exchanges, and public conversations engaging with artists, institutions, and contemporary practice across Sydney.

The program culminates in the public discussion 'Points of Contact: Museums & Biennales Between Worlds', bringing together leading international curators and museum directors to reflect on the evolving role of biennales, museums, and curatorial practice within shifting global conditions. The discussion features Adriano Pedrosa (Artistic Director, Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand), Mami Kataoka (Director, Mori Art Museum), Eungie Joo (Curator, Writer, Educator), and Carol Yinghua Lu (Director of Beijing Inside-Out Art Museum), moderated by Victor Wang (Executive Director, Artspace).

Art Basel HongKong part2.

올해 3월, 제12회를 맞은 아트바젤 홍콩(Art Basel Hong Kong 2025)은 다시 한 번 아시아 미술시장의 심장으로서 그 위용을 증명했다. 홍콩컨벤션센터에서 열린 이번 행사는 팬데믹 이후 완전히 회복된 풀 스케일의 페어로, 단순한 정상화 그 이상의 진화를 보여주었다.

이번 페어에는 전 세계 40여 개국에서 무려 250개 이상의 갤러리가 참여했으며, 그중 30여 개는 아트바젤 홍콩에 처음 모습을 드러냈다. 여전히 강한 국제적 관심과 참여를 입증했다.

전시장은 메가갤러리부터 이머징 스페이스까지 전례 없이 고른 수준의 프레젠테이션을 선보였고, 작품의 깊이와 다양성 측면에서도 훌륭했다.
2025년의 아트바젤 홍콩에서 가장 두드러졌던 변화 중 하나는 아시아권 컬렉터의 영향력 확대다.
한국, 싱가포르, 인도네시아, 태국 등에서 온 컬렉터들의 존재감은 그 어느 해보다 뚜렷했고, 한국 컬렉터들은 주요 구매 그룹 중 하나로 부상했다. 반면, 미주와 유럽의 전통적 컬렉터층은 일부 줄었으며, 중국 본토 컬렉터들은 여전히 규제와 자본 유출 이슈로 인해 보수적인 구매 태도를 유지하는 모습이었다.

하지만 중요한 점은, 이런 변화가 홍콩을 덜 국제적인 시장으로 만든 것이 아니라, 오히려 새로운 중심으로 재편되었음을 보여주는 신호였다는 것이 아닐까?

Part1에서 잠시 언급했지만 홍콩의 가장 큰 강점 중 하나는 1차 미술시장(갤러리)과 2차 시장(옥션)이 유기적으로 공존하고 있다는 점이다.
아트바젤 기간 동안 크리스티, 소더비, 필립스 모두 주요 이브닝 세일과 프리뷰 전시를 동시에 개최했고, 특히 필립스의 ‘New Now’ 세일은 이번에도 90% 이상의 낙찰률과 함께 눈에 띄는 실적을 기록하며 두터운 신진 작가 수요를 입증했다.

이러한 페어-옥션의 동시다발적 개최는 아트바젤 홍콩만의 강점이자, 콜렉터 입장에서는 단일 도시 안에서 신작부터 블루칩, 마스터피스까지 한 주 안에 경험하고 구매까지 할 수 있는 ‘원스톱 아트 플랫폼’으로 기능하고 있다.

홍콩컨벤션센터 안 아트바젤 전시장 자체는 여느 해보다 섹터별 구성이 정교했고, 조각/설치 작품을 중심으로 한 Encounters 프로젝트는 시각적 몰입감을 높이며 관람객들의 체류 시간을 길게 만들었던것 같다.

도심으로 눈을 돌리면, H Queen’s 빌딩의 고층 갤러리 투어 역시 인상적이었다. 가고시안, 페이스, 데이비드 즈워너, 하우저앤워스 등은 아트바젤에 출품하면서도 각자 갤러리에서 개별 전시를 동시 진행했다. 특히 올해는 젊은 작가에 대한 투자와 전시 비중이 늘어난 점도 주목할 만하다.

한편, M+를 비롯한 뮤지엄은 독립된 스케일의 전시뿐 아니라 야외 스크린 설치, 공공미술 연계 프로그램을 통해 아트위크의 문화적 볼륨을 확장했다. 야간에는 양푸동의 신작 영상이 빌딩 외벽을 가득 채웠고, 아피찻퐁 위라세타쿤의 영화 설치도 대중의 뜨거운 반응을 이끌어냈다.

여전히 나는 서울과 홍콩을 비교하는 질문을 많이 받는데 두곳다 다른 매력을 가진 곳이라는 점을 얘기하고 싶가.
서울과 홍콩은 구조와 성격이 여전히 다르다.
홍콩이 갤러리와 옥션, 국제 자본이 중심이 된 2차 시장의 허브라면,
서울은 갤러리와 미술관 중심의 신진 작가 발굴과 1차 시장에 더 집중하는 도시이지 않을까.

서울은 K-컬처와 함께 떠오른 MZ세대 컬렉터, 프리즈를 통해 유입된 글로벌 갤러리들이 만든 신선하고 젊은 에너지가 강점이라면,
홍콩은 여전히 국제 자본과 고전적 컬렉터 시스템의 정통성을 기반으로 아시아 전체를 묶어내는 구심점으로 볼 수 있지않을까.

2025년의 홍콩은 그 정체성을 더욱 공고히 하면서도, 동시에 젊고 실험적인 흐름에도 유연하게 반응하는 이중적 태도로 도시 전체가 진화하고 있다.

2025년의 아트바젤 홍콩은 단순히 미술 거래의 장이 아니라,
예술적 다양성, 시장 구조, 도시 경험이 하나로 얽힌 종합 예술 플랫폼이었다.

전 세계 미술계가 빠르게 변화하는 가운데, 홍콩은 여전히 그 중심에서 아시아 미술의 미래를 설계하고 있는 도시다. 1차와 2차 시장의 공존, 미술관과 상업 갤러리의 상생, 그리고 컬렉터 지형의 세대 교체. 이 모든 흐름이 충돌이 아닌 조화로 움직였다.
홍콩은 또 한 번 “예술의 심장”으로서 스스로를 증명해낸 3월 이었던것 같다. 9월 서울도 가보쟝! 🫶

Art-Partners had the pleasure of curating the talks once again for the Swire Properties Dialogue Series at Art Basel. The lively programme brought together leading voices and industry leaders from the art world. We especially enjoyed the provocative questions from our attending guests, who all commented on the eloquence and expertise of the panel. We would like to sincerely thank not only all our amazing and dynamic speakers and moderators - some of whom came from afar and made a special effort to participate in the panel - but also our guests who took time from their busy schedules to learn more about such engaging topics. ANN VERONICA JANSSENS presents her first solo museum exhibition in China, "pinkyellowblue" curated by Victor Wang, at M WOODS, Beijing, until November 26.

The show is conceived as a meditative journey through Janssens' 40-year career of color and light in motion. The survey exhibition features a selection of Janssens' luminous and sensorial works, inviting viewers to enter an immersive spectrum, where color and light combine to expand the senses and stimulate perception.

The exhibition, entitled pinkyellowblue, is curated by @viktorwang, Artistic Director and Chief Curator, M WOODS, as a meditative journey through Janssens’ 40-year career of color and light in motion, a survey exhibition that will feature a selection of Janssens' luminous and sensorial works, inviting viewers to enter an immersive spectrum, where color and light combine to expand the senses and stimulate perception.⁠

This survey exhibition, which comprises of key works from her 40-year career, was planned by Janssens and Wang and is constructed as a series of experiential encounters and ‘sensory modalities’ that highlight fundamental ideas and concepts that Janssens has been exploring throughout her career. Forming the core of this exhibition as an immersive body of color are several of the artist's most iconic works, such as pinkyellowblue, 2015-2023, and a new Beijing version of Janssens’ celebrated glitter sculptures.⁠
