Contrast therapy At @recoverienyc With FDNY Office Of Professional Development. It isn’t just about getting comfortable with being uncomfortable.

For first responders, intentionally moving between heat and cold can be a powerful way to train resilience, recovery, stress regulation, and mental health.

Cold exposure creates a controlled stress response—raising norepinephrine and strongly activating the sympathetic nervous system. The real training happens when you stay in that stressor while controlling your breathing, attention, and behavior.

That process can reinforce top-down regulation from the prefrontal cortex—the part of the brain involved in decision-making, impulse control, attention, and regulating emotional responses. Rather than saying cold exposure “develops” the prefrontal cortex, a more accurate way to put it is that repeated controlled stress gives us an opportunity to practice using those prefrontal regulatory circuits while the nervous system is under pressure.

Heat exposure can promote relaxation, increase blood flow, and support physical recovery after demanding shifts and training.

Used together, contrast therapy becomes a way to practice responding to stress instead of simply reacting to it.

For first responders, whose jobs repeatedly challenge both the body and nervous system, that ability to experience stress, maintain control, and return toward baseline is a major part of resilience.

These tools aren’t a replacement for mental health care, but they can be another piece of the larger picture: better recovery, greater self-regulation, and increased capacity to handle stress.

Grateful to be part of FDNY Office of Professional Development and bring this training to our members at Recoverie NYC.

25 YEARS. NEVER FORGOTTEN.

On September 11, 2001, the world changed forever.

25 years later, we will pause to remember the lives lost, the families forever changed, and the heroes who answered the call without hesitation. This September a basketball team of Queensland firefighters are traveling from Australia, to the USA to play against FDNY basketball and also LA city FD basketball as a commemorative game to mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11.

We remember the firefighters, police officers, paramedics, military personnel, and all the first responders who ran toward danger to protect others. We remember their courage, their sacrifice, and the countless acts of selflessness that followed.

This year we honor their memory and stand with the families, friends, and communities who continue to carry their loved ones in their hearts. Basketball is a bond that we share outside of our first responder role within in the community.

25 years later, their names still matter. Their stories still matter. Their sacrifice still matters.
