I asked for flowers, God gave me rain.

A year ago today, I replied to a Threads post. At the time, it felt like the stars had aligned. Here was an opportunity to spend four and a half months documenting a man running from Los Angeles to New York in pursuit of combating heart disease. It was the kind of assignment I had admired my entire life—the type of work that lived on the pages of LIFE Magazine and in the archives of Magnum Photos. The kind of journey that once led Gordon Parks and Thomas Hoepker toward stories that helped shape culture.

The objective felt simple: create photographs that do more than document a moment. Images that help shape how that moment is remembered. What I didn’t understand was that the assignment itself would become secondary to what it would demand from me.

Somewhere between California and New York, the project stopped being about running and became an exercise in surrender. I watched Percell chase a destination while realizing that most of us are doing the same. We spend our lives running toward purpose, belonging, love, success, God, or some version of ourselves that feels just beyond reach. We convince ourselves the destination is what matters, only to discover the road was doing the real work all along.

Over those four and a half months, I lost things I believed were necessary to sustain me: peace, financial stability, certainty, and direction. There were moments when the project felt less like a blessing and more like a test of endurance. A reality check repeated enough times to determine whether I truly wanted the life I claimed to be pursuing.

Yet every meaningful thing that has happened over the last year can trace itself back to that decision. My first solo exhibition. Showcasing work during Art Basel Miami. Being published by @leicagalleryny during their centennial year. Friendships that became family.

The irony is that none of those things were what I set out to gain. Many people know what this project produced. Very few know what it demanded.

I asked for flowers.

Instead, I received rain.
