Late Jan, I volunteered with Hustle 2.0, an entrepreneurship, personal development, & leadership program for men in max security prisons. I know it might sound cliché, but it absolutely changed my life. ⁣
⁣
Today I’m heading back to prison, this time as both a volunteer & a staffer (I feel like the luckiest girl in the world... crazy how much can change in a month). ⁣
⁣
There’s so much to be said about the program itself, & the amazing men it serves. ⁣When I left, I felt changed, angry, motivated— a fire under my ass because suddenly my family of loved ones had grown, and many were behind bars and subject to a cruel and unfair system.⁣
⁣
Ive teamed up with a Chicago based non profit @chisocialchange on a seemingly impossible mission. We had 2 weeks to get legislators in Sacramento to author bills that addressed requests from our brothers behind bars. ⁣
⁣
I’m thrilled to announce that AB3160, AB2835, AB1608, & SB 1367 are now bills that will be voted on in the CA legislature!!! I’ll post more details later, as we got a long road to get them to be passed as law.

Love, always.⁣

Spoiler alert:
I was arrested twice.
I was dealing drugs in college.
I was a bookie taking bets when gambling was illegal.
I was addicted to money, gambling, drugs - the fast life as I liked to tell myself.

I ask myself what if I were judged by the worst thing I did for the rest of my life?
What if I was locked up and given up on?
The system is set up to punish.....I believe in rehabilitation.

At least 95 percent of people incarcerated in state prisons will be released back to their communities at some point.
Everyone deserves a second chance. A second chance to learn the skills that will set them up to be a productive citizen that they may not have been exposed to due to the circumstances that they were born into. This is why I commit my time to volunteering in the prison system. This is why I have invited anyone in my network to join and volunteer with this amazing organization Hustle 2.0 that is changing people's lives, giving hope and most importantly providing the skills never taught to the majority of the people behind bars.
The funny thing is I end up finding out more about myself, I end up digging deep into emotional areas that I find hard to express with others and the guys end up teaching me just as much as I could ever teach them every time I go. Filled with emotion, gratitude for the life and opportunities I have and ready to continue to bring impact to others who may have made mistakes but NEVER should be given up on.

Now that we’ve completed the 2020 pageant season, I took some time these past couple days to reflect. I am struggling to find the right words to say just how truly blessed I feel to have this team who I consider family. Some we’ve known for nearly two decades and others just under a year. They are the unsung heroes. They are the ones who are the chaperones, the ones who drive to pick up the flowers and meals, the ones who sort through the tickets, the ones who make sure the contestants have a great time, the ones who are there to give a hug if someone can use it and the ones who I can count on. Each of us play an important role and when we fire on all cylinders, we create a beautiful production about empowering others to be their best every day. I’m thankful for this family who all have a life outside of pageantry yet they carve time to pour into our contestants. Another season in the books. Thank you. Gracias. Forever grateful.
