This Saturday, September 26th, UBC Men’s and Women’s Rowing athletes will be using stem-cell swab kits to join the donor registry for Canadian Blood Services, supporting the example of Vike’s Men’s and Women’s Rowing.

Following Calgary-born Vikes rower Max Pohl’s diagnosis with bone marrow cancer, Max began an initiative encouraging eligible donors to join the registry where he found a stem cell donor.

Less than 25% of patients who require a stem cell transplant find a donor within their family, and a match for a patient in Canada can only be found about 50% of the time. We encourage all healthy people aged 17-35 to join our effort in broadening the international registry for stem cell donors. A no-cost, 5 minute cheek swab is all it takes. Additionally, generous donors from Max’s team have created 4 monthly drawings for $1000 each for eligible donors! For more information on getting a test kit, dm @ubcwrowing , @vikes_mrowing , @teammaxvscancer , or visit:
https://www.blood.ca/en/stemcells/donating-stemcells/stemcell-eligibility-and-registration.

Success & Failure

They are two sides of the same coin.

You cannot have one without the other.

Success is not Final,

Failure is not Fatal:

It is the courage to continue that counts.

Success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.

Different path. Same drive. 🌊

Meet September’s PlaySafe Athlete Ambassador, Gabe Dyer.

From basketball to rowing, Gabe’s journey has been about stepping outside his comfort zone, embracing the unexpected, and trusting himself along the way.

For Gabe, sport is about more than performance — it’s about connection, integrity, growth, and building strong communities.

Stay tuned this month as we get to know Gabe, on and off the water. 🔥
