POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Today is 9/25, officially designated Dolly Parton Day here in California, honoring the recently departed singer, songwriter, actor, author and philanthropist.

Here at the Word Horde Emporium, we count Dolly Parton among our patron saints (right along with Edgar Allan Poe, with whom Dolly shared a birthday), not just for her songs in the Southern Gothic and Murder Ballad traditions, but for her big-hearted charity work, including giving away more than 300 million books to kids through her Imagination Library.

If you’re looking for a way to honor Dolly’s memory today, we recommend making a donation to the Imagination Library, or following Dolly’s example and picking up a book—or a few—at your local independent bookstore and gifting them directly to kids!

After all, kids who read grow up to be adults who think, and we need all of those we can get!

And if you need inspiration, here are some fantastic new arrivals to our Spooky Kids Zone! 😻

whew, it’s a wrap! we’ve been catching up on sleep with the studio manager and here’s the last stops and some other fun moments from the west coast!

Rushed off to @belcantobooks after landing in LA to sign a couple copies. Now I really understand why you need a car out here!

I didn’t have any events for LA but it was great seeing my books displayed at a couple shops like @skylightbooks

Concluding the tour with a NYC storytime where i got to listen to @vikki.chu read her debut book! Sugar Glider is now included on the polaroid wall @wordsonwarren too!

I forgot to take a selfie with our window display… It was a lot of fun painting and hanging out with the @wordsonwarren crew!

And along the way, I made some new friends!
Here I spoke to @mollymendoza.art students at PNCA and got the best comic book store tour from Molly the next day

@daneliuwrites really gave me a well rounded experience of Portland. We walked the forest, coast, and city center!

We even picked chanterelles with our guide @michellesumovich!

@kaitfeldmann was a champ chauffeuring me all over LA for 2 days. She still let me hang out with her adorable cats and poke around her amazing picture book collection

finally hanging out with my bestie @karinyamaz who took me to the big LA spots while stuffing me with delicious food 💕

Thank you to everyone who hosted us, invited us, and made time to hang out during a whirlwind September!

Back again with more picture books to add to your September wishlist 😂📚

This batch has such an interesting mix. There’s a dragon’s egg accidentally dug up in the garden, a little ghost searching for a new home, a boy who gets lost in the woods and spends the night with a mysterious bear and a very unusual town where everyone wakes up at midnight.

There are some very different stories here too, including a wordless book about a messenger dog during the First World War, the true story of Mary Peake secretly teaching Black children to read and a girl growing up alongside her rescue cat.

And I’m very curious about Letters from Fantastically Great Women. Six letters you can actually pull out and read from women in history sounds like such a fun way to do this kind of book.

Which one would you pick up first?
