For generations, the Kurdish people have endured borders drawn around them, wars they didn’t choose, and a long history of resilience. 40 million somehow remain without a country to call their own. Yet, they remain some of the most proud and kindest people I’ve ever had the pleasure to share this path of life with.

Behind every door, under shaded trees in the hills, in a bazaar -there was always an invitation for tea, a home cooked meal, a bed for the night, conversation and friendship.

While the landscape was truly beautiful, it’s the people that always stick with me. I hope to bring my family back for another visit someday.

⁨ جبل حصاروست (أو سلسلة جبال حصاروست) هو من أشهر وأعلى السلاسل الجبلية في شمال العراق، ويقع ضمن محافظة أربيل في إقليم كردستان قرب منطقة بالكايتي على الحدود العراقية الإيرانية. وتضم هذه السلسلة قمة هلكورد، وهي أعلى قمة جبلية في العراق بارتفاع يقارب 3607 متر فوق سطح البحر.⁩

“No friends but the mountains”—Peshmerga and Kurdish proverb.

For centuries, the Kurdish people have lived between Iraq, Iran, Turkey, and Syria. They are 40 million strong and have never been fully given a country of their own.

And so the mountains became refuge. The one constant that never turned its back.

The Peshmerga—“those who face death”—have long fought from these high places. Not because they wanted to, but because they had to. Because when everything else shifted a war was omnipresent, the mountains remained a constant.

Iraqi Kurdistan is once again caught in the middle of a much larger conflict.

As tensions rise between the United States and Iran, there have been reports of U.S. outreach to Kurdish groups about playing a role in pressuring Iran from the ground

But for the Kurds, getting involved would be a serious risk. It would mean fighting a neighboring country directly on their doorstep, inviting retaliation against their cities, and potentially being left exposed if outside support shifts which it surely would.

After decades of being pulled into other people’s conflicts, this is the kind of war that could cost far more than it would give.

My thoughts are with my Kurdish frinds I met while traveling the Zagros Mountain Trail last April. Their kindness, warmth and resilience has stuck with me. They deserve lasting peace as do the rest of the Kurds throughout the four countries. I hope one day they have their own nation.

For now, it remains “no friends but the mountains”
