POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Singer. Rapper. Painter. Filmmaker.

Vini Mercy was born in Moyo, in Uganda's West Nile region, and raised in Kampala. She doesn't treat music and visual art as separate pursuits. For her they are different ways of telling the same story, and the Nile runs through all of it.

In 2024 she released her debut EP, Nile's Jewel. This is a first look at the world she is building, and she is still at the beginning.

“What is that one thing that makes you feel at home?”

Seven artists spent this year’s EAVA Artists Residency answering that question. Together, their works now open as Threads of Belonging.
When artists are given space, mentorship and a public stage, they become voices for justice in their own communities, and their work finds its way to new audiences.

Every piece in this exhibition asks who gets to belong, and invites us to make room for one another.

“So in this residency, I’m so much expecting to learn how to unlearn.”

That’s @kigozi_akie , one of seven artists in the 2026 EAVA Artists Residency. When we asked the residents what they hoped for, the answers kept coming back to learning. For @kabeya_ilunga that means learning “not just to learn from the mentors, but also to learn from the other fellow artists.”

When young artists learn from each other, they build a community that can tell East Africa’s stories on its own terms.

Now their work comes together in Threads of Belonging. @hrauaf festival

“What I’m really expecting from the residency is to learn, and not just to learn from the mentors, but also to learn from the other fellow artists.” @kabeya_ilunga

Five of this year’s seven EAVA Artists Residency artists, on what the residency means to them.

@kigozi_akie , a surreal painter who also teaches young children, says he is learning how to unlearn: “Someone does not wake up one day with an ego.” For @vinimercy_ , art is “not just pretty pictures and colors.” @musinguzi18 believes “something big is going to come out of my career.” And @meriam_wajire puts it simply: “So I’m ready to learn.”

A residency is where talent finds direction. On 10 October, their work goes on show.
