HANDS comes from a poem written by Chrissie Harmse at the age of fourteen, shaped by a childhood marked by real hardship. It reflects on growing up dependent on others, where help often came with conditions and turned into control. The “hands”, “eyes” and “feet” symbolise those who gave, judged, directed, and eventually left, leaving lasting emotional impact.
At its core, the song is not just about poverty or charity, but about dignity and self-worth. It speaks to the realisation that, despite outside influence or judgement, identity and value are not defined by others. HANDS carries a powerful message of defiance—that no matter what is given or taken away, we all stand equal, with our own two hands, two eyes, and two feet
