The #Singaporean national treasure that is @violet.oon has been such an inspiration to me since I was a teenager — she started her career as a journalist & became a household name with her food and cooking empire. Julia Child is America’s Violet Oon! I feel immensely lucky to get to be her eating kaki sometimes. Thank you, dear Violet, for another memorable evening at one of your stupendous restaurants. (Look at the entire table, covered with food @ @bibik.violet — I’ll do a full post on that later.) It’s always priceless to makan & gab with you & @therealcolingoh , filmmaker & humorist extraordinaire! 🙏🇸🇬🍽️ . Reposted • @violet.oon CANNOT LOSE! Cheryl Tan en famille eat out super spectacularly every time she returns home from her NY base as Prof of story telling at Northwestern Uni. Straight off the plane at dawn - she is off to Mr & Mrs Mohgan’s Crispy Prata; then a hop and a jump to Empress Market for her dad’s fave tameepok; the Tanglin Club, Wilin Low’s Casa Mori….Red Star for dim sum on wheels! So…. When she came to dins @ Bibik Violet at Temasek Shophouse - I simply CANNOT LOSE - amd practically hurled the whole menu at her and fellow story teller Colin Goh - bosom pals from NY days and SG. Mummy Tan sends Cheryl to dins with a boxful of her fave Pineapple Tarts & I send her and Colin home with our Bibik Violet Kueh & Cakes. THEIR WORKS - CHERYL & COLIN capture SG’s funny Ha Ha-ness & our ethos and pathos - Cheryl and I share working in journalism with the late great news hound editor Felix Soh. Cheryl Lu-Lien Tan has captured from abroad (sometimes the best place from which to capture home) the unique SG life and times in the novel SARONG PARTY GIRLS, the memoir A TIGER IN THE KITCHEN and the soon to be released S.D.U., in other words Single Desperate Ugly…… alamak! Colin Goh, of the late last century’s famed satirical outwardly funny ha ha website with a deep serious meaning - TalkingCock.com, which morphed into the 2002 movie Talking Cock the Movie. Just last month his 2006 deeply moving movie Singapore Dreaming marked its 20th Anniversary with a screening. Colin is now Director of Advancement at the Intercultural Theatre Institute of SG.

📍@bibik.violet @violet.oon • I have been seeing this restaurant all over my social media leaving up to my trip to Singapore and I just knew I needed to try it. We had visited the great world city location and given that the space is quite small. You are unable to make reservations which was a little bit tricky for me bringing my grandparents. • Despite the location not being ideal, we still loved the food at the restaurant nonetheless. The food was not only very authentic, but it was all very reasonably priced. When looking at the menu we were all in awe and we’re fighting the urge to order the whole menu. Everything was so flavourful and definitely had us ordering bowls of rice to pair with those flavours. Mel The Concierge Series 🍽️🛎️🗝️ Episode III… 📍 Violet Oon Singapore - Dempsey @violetoonsingapore by @violet.oon One of the things I love most about being a Concierge is discovering places that allow our guests to experience a different side of Singapore. This time, I had the pleasure of dining at Violet Oon Dempsey and discovering the rich flavours and heritage of authentic Peranakan cuisine. And I have to admit… I’m still thinking about that Beef Rendang 🤤 Then came the warm tapioca cake with gula melaka and coconut milk - comforting, nostalgic and dangerously easy to finish. Beyond the food, the team truly spoiled us throughout the evening. From the service to the storytelling behind the dishes, it was a wonderful reminder that hospitality isn't simply about serving good food. It’s about sharing culture, creating connections and making people feel genuinely welcomed. Hospitality at its best ❤️ A big thank you to the entire team at Violet Oon Dempsey for such a memorable evening and for giving me another restaurant I can confidently share with our guests. If you haven't experienced it yet, make sure to visit their other locations too, including National Kitchen at The National Gallery Singapore and Violet Oon at ION Orchard. A fabulous afternoon with the equally fabulous Wilnelia Merced, Lady Forsyth, Miss World 1975. We met at the recently-held Miss World contest in Vietnam, where she was a judge, and I was delighted to show her around town during her Singapore visit. And of course, no proper introduction to Singapore would be complete without introducing her to one of my greatest culinary loves: Peranakan food! So off we went to Violet Oon for afternoon tea, where we inhaled a triple tray full of savoury and sweet treats. The afternoon became even lovelier when dear Violet herself joined us for a while. What @msposhnosh said: “You are interviewing @violet.oon, you BETTER be prepared HOR.” What I heard: If she complains to me, you are dead 😳 No wiser words from Hsueh for one of my early interviews with the culinary legend herself, back in 2014 when Violet was a judge for our Hawker Masters awards. “Baby” Eunice (as very kindly called by Violet although I’m too old for it) then would never have dared dream of being at this table, honouring the now happily retired culinary titans who shaped me over the years. It was very tough love, it was sleepless nights, it was the best of times. Mum always reminded me it was a privilege to be trained by them, and it still is. With @wongahyoke, they formed a core foundation of my life in food, and for that, I am forever grateful. We gathered at Violet’s table of plenty (swipe for our delicious @violetoonsingapore spread) together with many local superstars of Singapore’s food scene. Thank you Violet, for including me!🫶🏼 And to Hsueh and Ah Yoke, I may no longer see you guys in the office (I sat in between them), but I know we will still have many more meals together! PS: Just to be clear, they have retired, I haven’t. I’m still very much around and re-tired 😮‍💨😅.

When @violet.oon throws a party @violetoonsingapore she means business. On the one month anniversary of my retirement, she organised a high spirited dinner at her Dempsey restaurant. She corralled friends, newsmakers and four generations of food writers. And insisted on #angkukueh for the #dessert platter for luck. You know Violet, I'm already so lucky to have you as a friend! He's a third gen owner carrying on his family's legacy. You know how rare that is. @janetanys is taking her #allergenfree brand @roamidnight to #japan and the world. Hers was one of the last stories I wrote. You better believe I planned the last handful very carefully. @sulyntay and her brother are taking their mom's @violetoonsingapore places. I'm in awe of them, and what they've achieved. Plus, they have Singapore's largest collection of #peranakan tiles. I'm convinced. Three generations of food writers - @wongahyoke and @euniceq. With @violet.oon it would be four generations. It's Eunice's turn to carry the torch. No pressure! With @kwanja1965 who is carrying on his mom's legacy with @lovelanacakes. The #chocolatefudgecake generations grew up on. Mrs Violet Kwan will be 99 soon. Jason's sons are learning the ropes. @johanne_siy's @aro.singapore is one #restaurant opening I am looking forward to. I told her story the same day I told @janetanys. One business is called Roa, the other, Aro. Coincidence? 😉 The big group! Special shout out to @liqing.qingli and her Dad David, whose @greenwoodfishmarket is growing. I'm excited! One more for the road. Thank you, friends, for celebrating with @wongahyoke and me. Always a fan of Violet Oon’s food, so this visit to @bibik.violet at @greatworldsingapore was extra special for me! 💜✨ Had the privilege of meeting Violet Oon herself, and I was honestly so happy and honoured! 🥹❤️ Getting to sit down, hear her share some of her stories and take photos together made the whole experience so much more meaningful. Her culinary journey actually began when she was just 16, learning the dishes of her Peranakan heritage from her aunts and grandaunts — and that passion for preserving our food heritage has carried through the decades. And of course, THE FOOD! 😋 Bibik Violet is all about comforting Peranakan and local favourites in a more casual, everyday setting. Think Nyonya Laksa, Prawn Mee, Nasi Lemak, Kueh Pie Tee, Satay, handmade Nyonya kueh and nostalgic local bakes — the kind of food that feels familiar, hearty and made with lots of love. ❤️ I’ve always been a fan of her food, and after meeting the lady behind it all, I appreciate it even more. 🥹 There’s something so special about keeping our local food culture and heritage alive for the next generation. Singapore’s newest Peranakan cafe has arrived in Great World @bibik.violet 💫 Serving up authentic Peranakan classics with nostalgic flavours. From kaya toast and kopi mornings to comforting bowls of Nyonya laksa, nasi lemak, and prawn mee. There’s also chicken satays and an impressive spread of colourful kuehs and desserts. I really enjoyed their pulut hitam tart slice and the pandan gula melaka chiffon marble - both were so good💜 Paired it with the calamansi sour plum and teh c, which complemented the meal perfectly.
