One year on... 💜

This is where you'll find me today—my little piece of tranquillity, shared with 12 wonderful members and all of our lovely pupils who join us for classes.

Tucked away at the end of the road at Quex, it feels like stepping back in time. Surrounded by trees, you'll hear the bell tower chime every 15 minutes, the forge next door hard at work, horses wandering past, and birds singing all around. It's a truly special place.

The second photo takes us back to a year ago, when we first fell in love with this yard. What a dream journey it's been.

If you haven't found us yet, we'd love to welcome you. It's all waiting for you.

Unpacking the first experimental pit firing @thanetarchaeology this morning... Exciting results with reduced black areas and some gorgeous red flashes. The clay used was left over from archaeological digs across Thanet.

Pit firing is a primitive ceramic technique. Potters place dried, unglazed pots in a shallow dirt hole and cover them with organic materials like wood, straw, and leaves. The fire burns for several hours, reaching roughly 700-800C. Smoke and mineral vapors permanently stain the clay, creating unique patterns.

Well done guys, great results and an exciting start to our experimental firings!

I’ve spent the last few years making work that moves fast. Quick turnarounds, short form content, optimised for the scroll. And I enjoy it. But somewhere along the way I started to miss the feeling of just sitting with something.
FORM is my answer to that.

It’s a short film about a ceramicist. The repetition, the patience, the small decisions that go into making something by hand. Just the sounds of the process, the music.

It’s also 16:9 Widescreen. Horizontal. Because not everything needs to be vertical.

We’re all moving fast right now. Phones out, thumbs scrolling, half watching everything and fully watching nothing. I’m as guilty of it as anyone.

So this is me asking you to stop for five minutes. Put it on full screen. Let it be slow.

FORM is the first in People Round Here, an ongoing series of short films I’m making in between client work, shining a spotlight on the people and makers of Margate. More to come.

FORM is on YouTube now - link in bio.

There’s something quietly powerful about working with clay — slowing down, feeling the texture in your hands, and letting your thoughts settle as you create. Pottery is good for the soul, a gentle reminder to be present, to breathe, and to shape something beautiful out of the moment.

Come unwind with us, get your hands a little messy, and leave feeling a little lighter. We can help make some sense of this crazy world!

Video credit to @_studiomon big thanks to you for a wonderful day shooting in the studio. Full film coming soon.

It has been a very exciting day at the studio; some most excellent filming by @_studiomon and @thejmsparkes of our founder @violetshawpottery making a mug from start to finish.

I just can't wait to see the short film of the making process. From the intricate and well thought out shots to the equipment these guys used, it's bound to be beautiful! Thanks so much guys, you are both truly dedicated and passionate about why you do.
