Income is not a retirement plan. In fact, I like to say it’s the anti-retirement plan. 💸

Because income from your labor depends on one thing: your continuing to work.

The moment you stop trading your time, skills, and labor for money, that income stops too.

And there’s another important distinction between income and wealth: who captures the upside of value creation.

You can work hard, earn a great salary, and help build something enormously valuable. But if you don’t own any of it, the appreciation in that asset’s value goes to someone else: the owners.

That’s why ownership is so powerful for wealth creation.

Whether it’s equity in a private company, public stocks, real estate, or other appreciating assets, ownership gives you the opportunity to participate in value creation beyond what you’re paid for your labor.

And unlike your working hours, the potential value of those assets isn’t necessarily capped by your time.

Of course, income matters. It’s often what gives you cash flow, as well as the capital to invest and acquire ownership in the first place.

But if your goal is financial independence, the question isn’t just how much you earn.

It’s also about, and probably more dependent on, how much you own.

Let’s normalize talking about investing — share this with your partner or friend 🔥

The best founders I know are a little weird. Actually more than a little.

If you’re trying to build something, being middle-of-the-road reasonable can be a disadvantage. You have to articulate things other people don’t. Ignore things you’re supposed to care about. Take risks that look irrational. Keep going when the sensible response is to stop.

So if I had to answer: What’s more important for a founder, being weird or consistent? I’d pick weird.

Consistency is more complicated.

You can consistently do wrong or ineffective things. You can work 18-hour days, answer every email, clear every task off your list—and still not move the company forward. In fact, many smart and reasonable people do just that.

Founders don’t get points for being busy or following some 15-step routine every day. Outcomes are what matter.

And execution doesn’t have to come from you alone. In fact, it can’t in order to scale and build a big, impactful company. That’s why recruiting is such a critical founder skill: build an incredible team that can execute around the vision. I’d add you should also be brave and resilient — those are critical traits.

So in a nutshell: Be weird enough to see something other people don’t. Be unreasonable enough to pursue it and compelling enough to convince great people to see it too.

What are the most likely to succeed founder traits you see? 👇And send to a weird founder friend!
