The Italians (2025) written by Lisa Phillips Visca (@viscalp12) opens not with a gentle knock at the door, but with a trial by fire. Or rather, by thorns. Angelina, the formidable would-be mother-in-law (@michelledannerla), initiates Lily (@abbienormal9) not with welcome, but with wit sharpened into weaponry—roasting her with the ceremonial severity of an old-world rite. From that moment, the film declares its intent: this is no soft-edged romance, but a comedy that understands love often begins with discomfort.

What follows is an emotional journey of surprising breadth. Each character is allowed an arc, not merely a function. One laughs, yes—but one also cares. This is a romantic comedy with zest in its veins, laughter threaded with ache, and affection earned rather than assumed.

Lily’s repeated encounters with Angelina’s rose bushes are no accident. In Italian symbolism, roses are love’s beauty inseparable from its pain—a truth this film wears honestly. Rob Estes’ (@robestes8) Vincenzo provides comic relief with a conscience: flawed, remorseful, and endearingly human. He feels like family precisely because he errs.

Lainie Kazan (@lainie_kazan), as Lucia the matriarch, delivers a performance of stoical authority and emotional gravity. When Kazan and Danner finally collide, the result is the film’s most potent moment—a clash not of egos, but of generations and fiercely guarded love.

The ensemble is uniformly strong. Matthew Daddario (@matthewdaddario) impresses as Nico; Perrey Reeves (@perreyreeves) is flawless as Min, the neighbour who sees more than she says.

And the ending? Without spoiling it—invites you into a family that is loud, abrasive, and profoundly loving. It feels real. It feels lived-in. It feels like home.

Highly recommended—for laughter, for heart, and for the unmistakable courage it takes to love one another despite the thorns.
