Emancipation Oak
Hampton, Virginia

The Emancipation Oak is a 200-plus-year-old southern live oak on the Hampton University campus that served as an outdoor classroom for freedmen and the site of an early Southern reading of the Emancipation Proclamation.

In September 1861, free Black teacher Mary Smith Peake began teaching newly freed adults and children under the tree's sprawling branches, laying the groundwork for what would become Hampton University.

In 1863, members of the local community gathered beneath its canopy to hear one of the first Southern readings of President Abraham Lincoln's proclamation.

The National Geographic Society designated the tree as one of the 10 Great Trees of the World.

#hosted If you need an indoor activity where the kids can actually burn some energy, this is one to keep in mind ❤️

We got to check out the new @kidsempire.us in @visithamptonva with the girls, and we were ALL BUSY the entire time! Ya'll, either hubby and I are getting old or these munckins are TOO FAST 😂

Between climbing, sliding, exploring, the toddler area, and taking little snack breaks, there was plenty for them to do.

And because I know these are the things I’d want to know before taking my own kids somewhere 👇

✨ Know Before You Go:
- There’s a separate toddler area for younger kids
- Admission allows same-day re-entry
- Socks are required for kids and adults. They offer non-grip socks but totally bring your own grippy if you want
- You can complete the waiver online before you go
- They’re cashless
- Snacks + drinks are available inside
- There’s also an arcade area (motorized motorcycles + claw machines)

The girls were treated to snack boxes + arcade passes during our visit, which was the perfect little break before they went right back to playing. 😂🥰

Definitely a good option for rainy days, hot days, or those weekends when you’re staring at your kids like… okay, we need to get out of this house, lol

Coffee tastes a little different when the building has stories to tell. ☕️

Tucked inside historic Fort Monroe, Firehouse Coffee is exactly what it sounds like…a coffee shop inside a former firehouse, where the character of the building is just as good as the reason you stopped in.

Grab a cup, wander the fort, catch the breeze off the water, and remember that some of the best parts of Hampton Roads are hiding in places that have been here all along.

Consider this your sign to make Fort Monroe your next slow morning.

They are locally owned and operated! You can order one of their themed desserts or even create your own. They even have seasonal flavors like Biscoff Cookie and an Apple Pie themed dessert which is AMAZING! We are now hooked and can not wait to go back! #dayornight #hamptonroads

I’m so over the overpriced meals. By the time you add cheese, sub for real eggs, sub turkey products…I’m staring at the bill like wth did I order?!😩

Laura’s Rise & Shine Diner in Buckroe is a quaint spot with solid food, good customer service, and quick service. I ordered and had my food within 10 min and this only cost $11 after tax.

So if you’re looking for a spot that won’t have you turning into a mathematician when the bill comes out, check out Laura’s Rise & Shine Diner and tell them Betty sent you🫶🏾
