Took this photos about a year ago and it's still one of my favourite images of all time!

On my last day in Hiroshima, it was raining horribly but I'd not visited the Miyajima shrine, I wanted to visit this @unescoworldheritage site before I had to catch my train back to Tokyo.

I'm so glad I did, and I'm so glad I got to capture this beautiful image, so raw, so powerful and a true slice of life scene.

It's now entered I to the @lensculture Black & White Photography Awards 2026

I'm so immensely proud of this image, if anyone can support me by liking the image and sharing it I'd be over the moon.

I'll go back again soon to pay my respects again one day.

To all who get the chance to go somewhere and have the opportunity to visit a site like this or any other historical monument, please do. Don't miss out because you'll regret it. Take time out of your day to slow down, wander, and explore; Take in the scenery and be grateful for life and all we have.

Dave signing out.

How to see 3 cities in 3 days - no hotel change

If you want to maximize your time in Japan, Osaka is the perfect base for day trips. Featured:

📍 Dotonbori Cruise – A quick 20-minute ride departing from Minatomachi Pier, roughly £12. It gives you the best unobstructed views of the iconic Glico sign.

#osakatravel #hiroshima #japan #9to5travel #solotraveler

📍 Bullet Train to Hiroshima from Osaka – The easiest, fastest way to get out of the city for a day trip. Return ~£102, or ~£88 with the Kansai-Hiroshima pass. I had the Japan Rail Pass so it was covered.

📍 Peaceful Hiroshima & Miyajima UNESCO 1-Day Bus Tour - I booked this through Klook. It’s the most efficient way to see the Atomic Bomb Dome, Peace Memorial Park and museum (highly emotional but highly recommend), and the floating torii gate at Miyajima in one day without the stress of navigating transit alone on your annual leave.

This tour saved me a full day of planning and let me see both Hiroshima + Miyajima in one annual leave day. Perfect if you’re basing yourself in Osaka and want to maximise your time.

Save this if you’re building your Osaka itinerary 👇

Hydrating Miyajima the GEBURA Way

When the day is hot, you gotta hydrate yourself. @gebura_miyajima really knows how to do business. My first drink, Hiroshima Lemon Soda, was ¥500, but subsequent refills were only ¥200. It was chilled, refreshing, and had a unique sweet zesty lemon flavour. The bubbly sparkling soda gave an instant burst of refreshment.

Their “refill” system is simple and brilliant. Bring your GEBURA cup, and every drink under ¥800 from the second round onward is just ¥200. You can even switch drinks when refilling, making beer, highball, or other options incredibly affordable.

It’s a great way to stay hydrated while exploring Miyajima. I refilled with Hiroshima Lemon Beer (¥800), Coca‑Cola with Hiroshima Lemon (¥500), and Hiroshima Lemon Gin Cider (¥700) across their stores before heading back to Hiroshima. Yes, those are the original prices, and the refills really were only ¥200.

When in Miyajima, you really have to try Fried Momiji so you can say you’ve had the local specialty. I went to the most famous store and treated myself to two maple‑shaped fairy wands. 🥺

The batter was light and crispy, with oil that tasted clean and fresh, leaving no greasy mouthfeel or unpleasant smell. Each piece was piping hot on the outside, fluffy inside, and filled with flavourful cream.

Custard Cream (¥250) – Smooth, sweet and comforting, with a gentle richness.
Baked Cheese (¥250) – Savoury and creamy, with a pleasant balance against the crisp shell.

A simple yet iconic Miyajima treat, perfect for enjoying while strolling the island.

Corridors that speak in every language but one.

This walkway is lined with columns engraved in dozens of languages, all carrying the same word: peace. She walked through it alone, small against the scale of it, sunlight waiting at the far end.

I am glad I came early to reserve a slot at this famous unagi restaurant in Miyajima known among the locals. You cannot reserve online or by phone, so you have to physically be there and fill in the waiting list. I arrived at least 2 hours before opening to input my name, then explored nearby attractions. By the time I returned for their opening hours, the list was already a page full and spilling onto the next.

During the wait, I visited Daishion Temple and enjoyed the scenery around the restaurant. I was surprised to see so many deer in Miyajima, as I had only known about the famous floating O-torii in the sea. It felt almost like a smaller version of Nara.

Anago-Meshi (¥3500)
Be prepared to wait at least 20 minutes, as they prepare it fresh upon order. It was delicious, with no prickly tiny bones, just smooth, tender eel that melted in the mouth. The glaze was glistening and the sauce light yet umami, allowing the eel’s natural flavour to shine. The rice was chewy and well‑cooked, and the set came with a traditional clear savoury dashi soup with scallop (suimono), pickled sides, and chilled tea which was perfect for the hot weather.

Conger Eels Liver (¥800)
It was rich and savoury, with a clean taste that avoided any bitterness. Its texture was soft and creamy, almost silky, making it easy to enjoy. The flavour carried a subtle umami depth, offering a pleasant contrast to the lighter eel in the anago‑meshi. Though a small side dish, it felt indulgent and highlighted another dimension of conger eel cuisine.

Probably the best stay at Miyajimaguchi, this hotel is located near the ferry terminal and streetcar station, and just a few minutes’ walk from the train station. It was a great stay with good amenities, and I especially enjoyed a relaxing bath with a bath bomb.

Breakfast was a mix of Japanese and Western local food, splendid and filling. Although the buffet space was small and dining time was limited, the food was excellent. I particularly liked the chef's curry and the black sea bream ochazuke.

The staff were friendly and welcoming, which made check‑in smooth and pleasant. The rooms were simple yet comfortable, and the bath was a perfect way to unwind after sightseeing.

Practical touches made the stay convenient. Washing machines were available, ideal for longer trips, and amenities were placed on the first floor beside the counter with many items to choose from.

The property had a calm, homely vibe, perfect for recharging after a day out. With its excellent location close to transport links and pleasant surrounding scenery, Miyajima Coral Hotel proved to be a convenient, comfortable, and traveller‑friendly choice. It is a reliable base for exploring Miyajima while enjoying a restful stay.

Oyster & Seafood Deluxe Okonomiyaki (¥2690)
An oceanic Hiroshima‑style okonomiyaki layered with pork, egg, vegetables, and noodles, then topped with shrimp, squid, green onions, and four Hiroshima oysters.

The oysters were plump and briny, though a tad dry and mushy but pairing them with mayo, white pepper, or Otafuku sauce added flavour, creaminess, and moisture that elevated the bite. The shrimp were bouncy, the squid chewy, and the green onions crisp, giving a lively mix of textures. The okonomiyaki base itself was sweet and savoury, and eating it directly off the teppan kept it warm, adding to the fun “cook‑it‑yourself” feel even though the chef had already prepared it on the main teppan for about 20 minutes before serving it to your table’s teppan.

It was a filling dish, with the generous pork, egg, and vegetables underneath providing the hearty foundation of a classic Hiroshima okonomiyaki. Delicious and tastisfying, especially with the seafood deluxe topping.
