🔥 HAPPY WITH HEAT – HOT TAKES 9 🔥

What is Aufguss, and how is it different from Finnish sauna?

At first, the two may seem quite similar: hot stones, water, steam, and heat. But the biggest difference is who controls the experience.

In a traditional Finnish sauna, the bathers decide when to throw water on the stones, how intense they want the löyly, and when it is time to cool down. There is no programme. The experience follows your own rhythm.

In Aufguss, a sauna master guides the experience by controlling the water or ice, airflow, scents, timing, and intensity. In Show Aufguss, music, lighting, storytelling, and choreography can also become part of the ritual.

🔥 Hot take: Aufguss is not replacing Finnish sauna. It is adding another way to experience sauna.

Two sauna cultures, two different approaches, and an interesting opportunity to learn from each other.

🔥 HAPPY WITH HEAT – HOT TAKES 8 🔥

What makes a sauna feel relaxing? Many people think it's the temperature. But often, it's the lighting 💡

A beautifully designed sauna can lose its atmosphere if the lighting is too bright, too cold or placed in the wrong spot.

In Finnish sauna design, less is often more. Soft, indirect lighting helps create a calm atmosphere while still allowing guests to move around safely.

🔥 Hot take: The best sauna lighting is the lighting you barely notice. When the lighting feels right, you stop looking at the lights and simply enjoy the sauna.

One of the first questions international guests ask is simple: Can I pour water on the stones?🤔

In a Finnish sauna, the answer is yes.

That is how löyly is created. When water hits properly heated sauna stones, it turns into steam and creates a wave of warm, humid air that changes the entire sauna experience. In Finland, löyly is not just a detail of sauna culture. It is one of its most essential parts.

This is why Finns rarely ask only how hot the sauna was. They ask: How was the löyly?

A good sauna is not simply about temperature. The heater, the stones, the ventilation and the löyly all work together.

🔥 Hot take: The best sauna experience is not about making the sauna as hot as possible. It is about creating good löyly. A great Finnish sauna is one where heat, steam and comfort come together in the right balance.

Can sauna scents make a Finnish sauna experience better?

Absolutely. But when it comes to sauna fragrance, more is not always better.

Birch, pine, spruce and juniper can transform the atmosphere of a sauna and add another layer to the experience. But not all sauna scents are the same, and not all of them are used in the same way.

That is why it is important to follow the instructions and use products specifically designed for sauna use.

In guided Aufguss rituals, sauna masters often use snowballs or crushed ice to release moisture and aroma gradually. The goal is not to create the strongest possible scent, but a balanced experience that supports the heat and rhythm of the löyly.

And sometimes the best sauna scent does not come from a bottle at all. A traditional Finnish vihta or vasta releases the natural aroma of birch and brings a touch of the Finnish forest directly into the sauna 🌿

🔥 Hot take: The purpose of sauna scent is not to overpower the sauna. It should support the löyly. The best scents enhance the experience without taking it over.

What should you wear in a Finnish sauna?

One of the most common questions international sauna guests ask has a surprisingly simple answer: It depends on the sauna.

In Finland, people often sauna nude in private and many single-gender saunas. In mixed public saunas, swimsuits are commonly worn, and some places also provide towels.

The most important thing is not what you wear, but understanding the sauna culture around you.

A Finnish sauna experience starts with a shower. Cleanliness is an essential part of sauna etiquette and helps keep the sauna comfortable for everyone.

🔥 Hot take: You do not need special sauna clothes or complicated rules to enjoy Finnish sauna. Come clean. Follow the local sauna etiquette. Use a seat cover. Listen to your body.

🔥 HAPPY WITH HEAT – HOT TAKES 4 🔥

Is there real demand for sauna tourism?
More and more often, the answer is yes.

Guided sauna experiences, sauna tours and travel packages are already attracting international travellers. In these experiences, sauna is not simply an amenity but the reason for the trip.

What feels obvious to a Finn is not always obvious to a first-time visitor.

What is löyly?
When should I cool down?
How long should I stay in the sauna?

Good guidance turns a sauna visit into a meaningful cultural experience.

But even a great sauna does not automatically become a tourism product. International guests need to understand what they will experience, what makes it special and how to book it.

🔥 Hot take: Finland does not have a shortage of saunas.

The real opportunity is to turn more of them into experiences that international travellers can find, understand and book.
