Exploring Africa through architecture and culture. 🌍

Through Studio Anino, I have been exploring the language of architecture across Africa—
how culture, landscape, and expression shape the spaces we inhabit.

The journey began in Lagos, inside the John Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History.
There, architecture becomes a vessel for heritage. Moving through the exhibitions—stories of Yoruba cosmology, craft, music, and tradition—reminded me that culture is not static. It is lived, performed, and carried forward.
I was especially proud of my sister — @RéLagos exhibit. The silk faille shirt and asó-oké pants were inspired by the melding of two cultures — Itsekiri and Yoruba.

From Lagos, the journey continued to Zanzibar City, walking through the historic streets of Stone Town.
White plaster walls, carved wooden doors, and coral stone buildings speak quietly of centuries of trade, migration, and craft. The interior design at Firefly Hotel was particularly stunning. I experienced authentic Stone Town living at its finest. Beyond the city, the island opens into brilliant blue waters and landscapes where architecture and nature exist in gentle balance.

Later that summer, a brief two-day visit to Addis Ababa revealed another expression of design. The National Museum took me through ancient culture— with the privilege of seeing Lucy ( our 3.2 million year old human ancestor!) I also loved the industrial modern design at Café Choché in La Gere Station; enjoyed the best cappuccino ever, and at Friendship Park—gardens layered with calla lilies, cascading waterfalls, and stone walls shaping pathways through nature.

Together these places tell a powerful story.

Africa’s architecture is not one aesthetic or one tradition.

It is a constellation of cultures—
expressed through museums, cities, gardens, and landscapes.

For Studio Anino, these journeys are reminders that design is never separate from people or place.

Architecture is expression.
Architecture is culture.
Architecture is belonging.

And across Africa, the stories are waiting to be explored.

Gather market, Lagos. 2025. This Summer, 2025 – in Lagos, Nigeria, I had the pleasure of visiting the gather market (a beautiful community of women-only brands) with @Ré Lagos/@visualsnub, @frames_by_darek/whos_darek and @omotayocoker. Located at Alliance Française, Mike Adenuga Centre, Ikoyi, Lagos, this bustling outdoor event with a DJ, hosted over 50 women-led brands, selling handcrafted wellness products, food, jewelry, clothing, accessories, home goods and all sorts of wonderful little things.
I was delighted to discover beauty and creativity within the range of products being designed and developed by our female creative communities in Lagos.
